1st day of Spring 2012

Time to kick back and relax! why? I'm done for today woohoo! Today was the first day of classes for the spring 2012 semester and so far my classes are good. I'm praying for a stress free and easy semester. Last semester was highly stressful and my grades due to stress and other things that occurred.
It's a new semester and a new year and I'm ready to regroup and start from scratch and do a lot better. My goal for this semester is to obtain at least a 3.0 GPA. I'm really aiming for a 4.0 but I don't want to set the bar to high, trying to stay realistic here!

I want to hear about some of the goals that you all have for yourself this semester. Do you want to learn how to manage your stress better? Maintain a good GPA? Join a new student club/organization? What are your goals? Feel free to leave me a comment in the comment box below and let me know about the goals that you are setting for yourself this semester. Happy New Year!! 2012 is here!!

I can't stop shouting "Happy New Year" to every person I run into. I'm so excited to welcome 2012. 2011 was an amazing year. It was filled with many ups and downs but I'm ready to start off fresh and take on new adventures and amazing opportunities.
I know some of you may have been wondering where in the world I was. I'm sorry for my lack of posting by the way. Below is a list of things that kept me busy and away from the blog.

1. I started my junior year of college
2. I had math & English grammar in the same semester (2 hard and stressful classes)
3. I was a summer camp counselor
4. I traveled everywhere this summer (Philadelphia, New York, Washington DC and more)
5. I became a resident assistant in the freshman dorm at school (I'm a temporary mommy to 25 girls..HELP)

Yes, Yes, Yes! I was busy however, this upcoming semester is going to be a lot smoother and easier! Thank God!!!! I will be back with more posts and updates on what's going on with me. I wish you all the best with everything and enjoy every moment of 2012! Best wishes :))

I apologize for being M.I.A with this blog I have been sooooo busy this past fall semester. I had numerous new responsibilities and opportunities that came my way on top of juggling my academics. Tortoise & Blonde

I recently became the new owner of a pair of beautil Tortise & Blonde sunglasses!! I would recommend these to everyone! They are a must have, especially in this 90 degree weather that we have going on in North Carolina. Trust me, I will be using these on my upcoming spring break trip to Miami which I'm soooooooooo excited about. I have already paired these shades with all of my outfits for my trip. I know I'm ranting but I have to let you know all know about these.

Getting Ready!!

Sorry again for my absence. I have been so busy these days. I moved back home from summer camp and then I had to organize and re-pack everything so that I can move back to college. I'm officially entering my junior year of college tomorrow. Classes begin tomorrow bright and early and I'm ready!! I may sound like a nerd by saying this but I love school and I've always have. I don't know what it is but I love it. Once I get adjusted to my class and work schedule I will be blogging on a more consistent basis. I'm Back!!!!

Sorry that I have been M.I.A from the blog. I missed you all dearly. I was so busy this summer!! I was working as a camp counselor at a summer camp in Poughkeepsie, New York. I had a great time and met a lot of cool people. Another reason that I was away was because I was in Washington D.C. at The White House. Yes, The White House!!!! I had an amazing time and I will never forget it.

I was invited to attend a Community Leaders event hosted by White House Officials on Friday August 5th. The event was a way for community leaders from all over the USA to voice their concerns, goals, stories, issues, etc to WH officials. We had the chance to hear from John Kelly, Jon Carson, Mark Doms, Valerie Jarrett and more! They informed us of different White House goals and initiatives that they are currently working on. They also wanted to get our input on various topics.

Later in the day, we were able to take a tour of The White House!! I was a bit nervous but overall excited. Walking through the White House I felt a sense of appreciation, honor, beauty and more. Everything I saw was beautiful!!! At times I had to pinch myself because it felt like I was dreaming. However, this was no dream!

Once the tour was over, my fellow activist friend and I took off to lunch in the city. Once we were done we headed to the WH conference center where we had the chance to meet with other departments such as The Department of Education and others. Of course I chose to meet with The DOE. All the leaders voiced their concerns about education and other things that were going on in their communities that related to education. It was exciting to listen to other leaders speak on different things that they are doing in their communities and the things they are fighting for.

Overall, I had a great time and I'm truly appreciative of all of it! I would encourage everyone to continue to seek out opportunities to work towards change in your communities and keep going strong with it because you never know where it can lead you to. Who knows, one day you may end up at the White House :)

Dress Like a Fashionista ~ Bridget

Meet Bridget!
I am a twenty-two year old recent college graduate from southeastern Pennsylvania. I have developed a love for fashion over the years and enjoy blogging about it. I have a degree in Spanish Education and am in the process of receiving a certificate in fashion styling from the American College of Professional Styling. I am also attending the School of Style this July in Manhattan. I do love teaching but I would really love to become a fashion stylist someday. In my free time I like to spend time with my boyfriend and guinea pig, hang out with my friends, read, and of course GO SHOPPING!

Describe your personal style

My personal style is really difficult to describe. I would say the word to describe it would be eclectic and whimsical. I love color and print and like to stand out among the crowd. I am constantly mixing vintage in with new pieces to create a funky look.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.

I loved dressing up as a child. I would constantly rummage through my grandmother’s jewelry and scarves and pretend I was a glamour queen. I started wearing make-up very early and was lucky enough to have a mom who let me experiment. When I was in high school I was more into looking like everyone else with a slight twist because we had a dress code. Once I got into college I started reading more fashion forward magazines like Nylon and making trips to the Goodwill. It was a fantastic evolution.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?

Well as a recent college grad I can def. feel the pain of fashionistas on a budget. I recommend shopping at stores that you can afford. I always get compliments on my clothes and unless someone asks where it’s from, they don’t need to know. Check out thrift stores! I get tons of compliments on items I pick up at the Goodwill and Salvation Army. Also, treat your clothes with kindness… when I was in college I bought a metal drying rack that saved a lot of clothes from fading and shrinking. If there is one piece you just HAVE to have, use cost per wear. For example… do you want a $100 purse? Think about how much you will use it and your budget. If you can afford it and use it 50 times, that’s $2 per wear…. not too bad! That is if AND ONLY IF you have the money… if you are broke look for a budget version of the bag.

What are your fashionista five must haves?

1. A great watch (I have a large, boyfriend-style Fossil watch that I love)

2. A good and comfortable pair of heels in a neutral color

3. A well made bag that is the perfect size for you (I love my Longchamp Le Pliage bag)

4. A good pair of sunglass (Raybans are awesome)

5. Good mascara (Some of my faves are Lancome, Maybelline, and Dior)

Name two of your favorite fashion designers.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?

H&M, Zara, Forever 21, Asos on-line, Goodwill, Salvation Army, Aldo, TJMaxx, Marshall’s, and DSW.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?

Carrie Bradshaw. I started watching SATC during my style evolution and it was a huge influence on how I dressed. I believe Carrie is the ultimate fashionista because she is not afraid to wear what she wants and is always bold with her style.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?

Invest in good products. When I turned 21, I treated myself to a makeover at MAC. You don’t have to buy everything from the makeover but I would recommend a good concealer and foundation/tinted moisturizer. Mascara is something you don’t need to spend a lot on, especially if you buy a brand like Maybelline. After a night out or of studying, the three things you need are concealer, mascara, and blush. Put on some lip balm and you are good to go.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?

I would have to say Rachel Bilson because she already has such incredible taste. She and I have a similar style and I think we would work well together.

My style is transitional. It is undefined. I don’t stick in just one

style. It also depends on the place that I go to. You would always see

me in a simple shirt or pants but in pictures, There, I can show you

outfits that I don’t really use when I’m outside the house. I love

anything neon and leopard. I always keep my look trendy and I always

go for a classic one.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice

that you would suggest?

Don’t spend too much to the things that will easily corrupted. Always

don’t follow some trends, Trends are just passing and gone. If you’ll

buy some of fashionable trends after it will be obsolescent to the

public you can’t even use that again. Find your clothes on Thrift

stores there’s a lot of fashionista clothes there and all of them are

branded. But my advice is just wear whatever makes you happy!

What are your fashionista five must haves?
Head Accessory, a pair of a skinny jeans, a dress, nice shirt and a smile.

Name two of your favorite fashion designers.
Alexander Wang and Stella Mcartney.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?
Usually thrift store (Ukay! what we called here) and in a local stores or malls.

I have so many lots to mention but most of people that I looked up to

of the reason who inspires me to put up my own fashion blog and Andrea

Torres(Stylescrapbook.com) because living in Paris is just so amazing!

that be and why?
I think it could be Selena Gomez! Because I think she is not choosy in

choosing what she wants to wear not like the other celebrities, plus

she had that natural look that there’s no need for her put a lot of

accessories or cute outfits. Her beautiful face was already her

fashion statement.

Summer break is going by so fast!!! Soon, most of us will be heading back to school or starting your freshman year. Recently I have become very busy with traveling, work, blogging, etc. This week I will begin my summer camp counselor job in New York that I'm so excited about! I'm a 31 year old mother of 2. i used to work full-time but i decided to stay home with my kids. i'm really busy ensuring that i don't raise future criminals. i really like to dress up, but at the same time, sometimes i don't. i don't have a glamorous life so oftentimes i am super-overdressed for the grocery store. i enjoy the stares.

Describe your personal style
- i have a motto, "just go for it". it's really close to nike's "just do it", but don't tell them. i like all different kinds of styles and depending on my mood, that's how i dress.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
-i have always been into dressing up and enjoying putting together a look. from a small age i have loved sequins and poofy skirts. i've always been pretty opinionated about how i look. now i have been blessed with a daughter with the same preferences. she keeps me hopping. the best thing about aging is becoming more and more confident in my personal style and my body confidence.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
-in college i was able to live with 3 of my best friends. we were all around the same size and we all had slightly varying style. it was basically a 4 closet free-for-all.we saved money and we learned a lot about respecting other people's belongings.

as far as tips- establish a budget. AND FOLLOW IT.

What are your fashionista five must haves?
1- jeans you love to the end of the earth.

2- a fantastic warm coat. if you live in a cooler climate, a coat is a part your everyday look. shivering in style is important.

3- sleep.

4- a great-fitting bra.

5- a gray cardigan.

- michael kors. because he is perpetual summer.

- victoria beckham. over-the-top and understated at the same time. is that even possible? fantastic. plus, she fulfills my british crush/late 90s pop star/married to david beckham fix.

-i'm really into goodwill. i love finding things no one else will have. because i run a household, i spend a lot of time at target so i always drop in their women's clothing section. i've been very pleased with their take on trends without breaking my bank. and i love jcrew(who doesn't?) and walking into a nordstrom is like coming home after a long day.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
-i really enjoy nicole richie's style. sometimes glam, sometimes completely laid back.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
-i always feel best when i get enough sleep, eat well, exercise and have my eyebrows a freshly waxed. and moisturize. i love anything from aveeno. i sound like i am 65 but it's what works.

also, my roomate emily taught me to apply some eye shadow with a tiny droplet of water on my lid if i really want it to stay put all day. it works. i swear by it. i'm too busy to be hauling my make-up around all day and constantly reapplying.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
-britney spears. we've all seen the tabloids. girlfriend needs help.

Guest Blogger Post ~ What to wear an interview

Hi ABCs of College readers! I’m Angeline, and I’m excited to be stopping by today from The New Professional where I blog about office appropriate fashion, style, etiquette, and career topics. As school ends for the year, it’s likely that you’re pursuing an internship or job. A key component to the hunt is your interview, and developing good interview habits now can really pay off in the future.

First impressions count, and how you dress for your interview goes a long way in establishing a positive or negative first impression. Some things to consider when picking an interview outfit:

• Industry. Some industries are just more conservative than others. Take the legal profession, for example. You’ll likely want to wear a suit even for an internship interview. But a graphic design firm may have more lax standards (or even expect a more creative outfit).

• Season and comfort. Dressing for the wrong season can result in being noticeably uncomfortable. But keep in mind most offices are air conditioned.

• Location and setting. If you’re going to a small office in a corporate business park, those just-comfortable-enough pumps may be okay. But if you’re going to large campus or somewhere that has outdoor areas, make sure your attire is appropriate in case you end up on an impromptu tour.

What to wear:

• Trousers are a safe option. Make sure they fit nicely (no dragging hems), you don’t have any VPL, and that they’re ironed.

• If you’re more of a dress or skirt kind of gal, keep it as close to knee length as possible, and in a structured shape (sheath or a-line skirts are both nice). The top should not be too revealing (no cleavage or thin straps). Do not go sleeveless (or if you do, make sure you have a topper).

• A topper, such as a blazer or cardigan, adds a polished look instantly. Look for something that fits your shoulders and hits near the top of your hip.

• Color. Make yourself stand out a bit. But keep it in check…try a colored top with a neutral bottom, or add a fun pop with shoes or accessories.

• Oxfords. The classic button-down shirt is a safe bet, but make sure it fits properly (no gaping at the chest) and is ironed.

• Sophisticated accessories. Going completely accessory-less would be boring (and you certainly aren’t boring—you’re fresh and young and smart). So keep your choices simple and elegant—a demure chain or pendant with a similarly toned ring and earrings, for example.

What not to wear:

• Shorts. Sure, some workplaces don’t mind the “city short” look on women, but you never know until after you start working and get to observe the environment a bit. If it’s too hot for pants, opt for a skirt (sorry boys).

• Sleeveless tops without a topper. While many workplaces don’t mind this once you’re employed, it’s always better to be on the safe side for an interview.

• Strappy shoes or sandals. Peep-toes can be okay for the most part. If you’re not into boring shoes, pick a conservative style in a fun color.

• Party tops. If you’d wear it to a club or frat party, it is likely not office appropriate.

• Over the top jewelry. Shoulder-skimming earrings have no place in an office. Save your statement rings for later.

• Jeans. Even if you’re interviewing at a casual establishment, at least try to get some chinos. If you must, go with a dark wash that isn’t faded or torn.

Describe your personal style
I consider my style "casual chic", hence my blog name Casual Chic Kiki. But, I like to play with different styles. It makes getting dressed fun! There are two things I look for in an outfit: comfort and cuteness. Am I comfy? And do I feel good in it? If I feel good in an outfit it makes my day that much better.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
Yes! I have always been into fashion and beauty. When I was little my mom and I would go to the fabric store and I would get to pick out patterns and fabrics and then my mom would make the outfit. I had some pretty fun outfits back then. But I was always comfortable, usually in stretchy, cotton-knit and leggings. I also remember going school shopping every summer and especially picking out a special "first day of school" outfit. As for my personal style over the years...I've never really dressed like other people, but neither has my mom, so I guess I learned that from her. I've always liked being comfortable and different. In high school polo shirts, jeans and tennis shoes were really popular, I opted out of the polo shirts and tennis shoes as long as I could. I ended up trying it and it just wasn't me. So, I found a style I liked better...flannels, Henleys, wranglers and boots. College led to jeans, comfy tees and belly-baring tops and then when I came back to the real world I still stuck with jeans, but chose colorful tops, cardigans and shoes. Now, jeans are still my staple, but I really love dresses and skirts and trying out new styles. I'm always layered because I'm usually cold and I have always loved shoes. I am also really into accessories, which is a new obsession within the last 2 years.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
I rarely buy anything at full-retail price! My favorite stores have sales often and if I find something I love that's not on sale I usually wait for it to go on sale. Unless you truly NEED a piece of clothing ASAP, never pay full price! I also search the internet for better deals. I rarely buy online, but when I do, I make sure it's a fab deal. Watch for free shipping too. Also, never buy anything that is just so-so. You should spend your money on items that you LOVE, that make you feel fabulous!

What are your fashionista five must haves?
Great fitting, dark wash boot-cut jeans. Dark wash skinny jeans. Cardigans in various fits and colors. A multi-strand necklace in silver and one in gold tones. Comfy black flats.

Name two of your favorite fashion designers.
In high school I wanted to be a fashion designer and my favs were Christian Dior and Chanel. I don't follow designers much anymore. I like to focus on wearable clothes. However, the chances that Chanel took really moved me. She changed women's fashion in a such a dramatic manner.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?Macy's, LOFT, Target, TJ Maxx.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
I can't pick just one. I have to name my favorite fashion bloggers here. Melissa of A Working Mom's Closet for staying true to her sense of style and the dress code. Megan of Megan Mae Daily for her risk-taking and unique pieces that she so effortlessly wears. Also her fantastic shoe collection! Kimberly of Fashion Momma for sharing her style journey with us and getting more daring and fabulous everyday. Taylor of It's My Cardi for her love of color and color mixing and her amazing shoe collection.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
Have fun in college! It's the one time in life that you get be completely free! Go natural during the week in classes and go glam on the weekend! Oh, but remember to take care of you skin. A good face-wash, moisturizer with SPF and quality make-up are key to staying healthy.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
That's a tough one. Since I started following fashion blogs I have been focusing on those ladies more than celebs. I really love Kate Hudson's style and Rachel Bison's style. I choose Kate because I love her energy. She's so free and laid back, but just gorgeous when it's time to dress up.

I'm back!! Rambling about my recent trip to Philadelphia

The reason why I have been a bit M.I.A lately was due to my recent trip to Philadephia. It was my mini vaction mixed with a training hosted by Young People For organization. I was recently accepted as a Fellow for the 2011-2012 school year for YP4. It is an organization that allows young people to stand up for the issues that they believe in. Mine is affordable education for all!

During the training I spent countless hours in workshops such as reproductive rights, immigration, drugs in America, higher education, opression and so much more. This was such an amazing experience. I was able to meet so many inspiring, talented, smart, funny, people while in Philly. Spending my time with other young activists was amazing.

To make a long story short, I had a great time and I learned so much from the training. I will make sure to keep you all posted on any upcoming happenings!

Hello The ABC's of College readers! My name is Linley and I run a blog called Dwelling and Telling. http://dwellingandtelling.blogspot.com/It's a place for me to share my life as a newlywed, my ever-evolving style, and whatever else I want (usually DIYs, recipes, and random thoughts). I grew up in NC - lived there all my life. Last summer I married my best friend and we packed up and headed down to Alabama - where we currently are living!

Describe your personal style
My personal style is relaxed and simple. I always aim to have a look that is pulled together and simple, but still interesting and pretty. I've only been style blogging for a few months, but during those months I've really taken advantage of seeing myself, dressed, through a different medium (photos rather than just a mirror) and feedback from the blogging community, Those two things alone have really had an impact on shaping where my style is now. Honestly, my style is more eclectic than anything, but going back to my initial sentence - no matter what I always try to keep it simple and relaxed.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
I've always payed attention to fashion. I remember loving dressing up in my elementary years. I would say it wasn't until my early twenties that I really started to pay attention and keep up with trends and fashion magazines. Once I really started to notice these things I shopped a bit differently - with my personal style and trending style in mind. My personal style has definitely evolved over the years - I didn't always care as much as I do now, but there was never a time when I didn't care. I've always cared, but only recently made it a larger part of who I am.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
I have a few tips for you! Before you go out shopping, take a look at your closet and take inventory of what you have, what you don't have, and what you need. If you focus on purchasing basics (a trench coat, nice flats, quality denim, a white tee and button up, etc.) you'll be set. Really try to avoid impulse purchases - and even trends. A classic look will never go out of style. It's also important to shop your closet - wear what you already have. Push yourself to remix pieces - this will help you make tons of new looks without spending a dime! If you must spend money browse your local Goodwill - I've found gorgeous, gently used pieces. Also, places like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ross are great places to find quality clothes at a discount!

What are your fashionista five must haves?
Skinny jeans, a white tee, a versatile dress, a statement necklace, and a fitted jacket. These are all pieces that can be mixed, matched, and remixed again.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?
Target, TJ Maxx, and Gap are probably my top three; however, I think you shouldn't limit yourself to only shopping at a couple stores. There are always deals to find and gorgeous pieces here and there!

What are some of your favorite spring trends?
I am loving the spring trends this year! Color blocking, neons, pastels, layers - it's all so lovely. The thing is is that I try not to give into trends unless I think it's a piece I can get more than one season out of - it just doesn't make sense to me to spend lots of money on something I'll wear two to three times for only one season. I did splurge on a pair of white skinny jeans. I'd been wanting them for the past several spring seasons and I finally took the plunge! I think they are a great piece to have for all of spring and for summer - I adore them.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
You know, I've never really had one fashion icon. I think because my style is whatever I want it to be - whatever I feel good and comfortable in, that's what I wear. However, there are a couple of ladies that I really do adore their personal style - Lauren Conrad, Zooey Deschanel, and Olivia Palermo.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
I've learned so many tips and techniques via YouTube. YT is the mecca of makeup gurus! There are so many lovely ladies on there sharing everything they know and giving fabulous tutorials. I would say invest in a nice set of brushes and some quality products and you're good to go! It's better to have quality over quantity when it comes to makeup. And never overdo it!

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
Hmm, I think I would go for someone like Britney Spears. Let's be honest, she's a mess. I think even little Linley in Alabama could help that girl out! And it would most likely be noticed - and then I've got my foot in the door! (I dream to be a stylist!)

Today marks the anniversary of my blog. I cant believe an entire year has passed since I started this blog. I want to say thanks to all of my readers and followers, I appreciate you all so much! I enjoy writing and keeping you all informed on everything college. During this past year, I have been given so many great compliments and advice about my blog. I appreciate each one of them. I want to also thank all of the people that took time out of their day to let me interview them. I'm excited to announce that I have been accepted as a Young People For Class of 2011-2012 Fellow! I received my acceptance letter back in May and I'm so excited to share the news with everyone!!!!

Savings!!

For those of you who will be working this summer, I know your parents may have already told you this but I want to put it in your ear once more. Saving some of your earnings for college is very important. Why?, you may ask. Saving money for college will help when unexpected things may come up while you are at college away from your parents who would be able to pay your way out of it.

Saving money is one thing that will help you become a more responsible young adult and it also teaches you a sense of independence. When I was a freshman I saved some of my hard working summer earnings and things such as food expenses, shopping trips with friends, textbooks costs, etc came up during my freshman year. I didn’t want to always rely on my parents or other family members to always give me money for the things. I made sure I always had money in my bank account to cover my own expenses.

When your parents begin to notice that you aren’t always asking for money, they will be more willing to help you out if anything major ever happens. When I say save your money, I don’t mean put 90% in your savings account. Put at least 40-50% of it in your savings and the remaining can be used however you choose. Always remember to check your account every now and then to make note of how much you are spending. You don’t want to overdraft, nobody wants that to ever happen. Good luck!

Meet Shalanda
I am a 27 year Project Engineer, with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. Ever since I can remember I've had a love of fashion, always dressing up for everything, and providing my friends and family with style advice. Outside of fashion blogging, I'm learning how to sew, will be taking a pattern-making class, love singing karaoke, and I write music.

Describe your personal style
My personal style would lean towards the modern frugalista. Though I'll wear anything that I feel fits my body. I don't do a lot of vintage or thrift shopping. I like modern, classic styles, and cheap interpretations of trends that I actually like.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
I've always been more into fashion than beauty. It really wasn't until college that I started experimenting more with makeups, and beauty products. My style has definitely changed over the years. I just to wear mesh, zip-up hoodies over every top I owned with a cute pair of jeans and heels. After awhile I started exploring more skirts, and now I wear a lot of dresses.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?

If you are trying to do a trend, definitely stick to stores like Charlotte Russe, Rave, and Forever 21. They are cheaper clothes, so they won't have long lasting quality, but definitely perfect for college years, because after you graduate you'll develop a new wardrobe for whatever job/profession you pursue, and won't think twice about tossing that $6.50 top from Char Russe. Also they have things that at other stores are overpriced for no reason. For instance lace tank tops. I love those, and I still have a ton from Charlotte Russe. Probably got them 2 for $10 or something...why pay $25 for a lace tank??

What are your fashionista five must haves?

1. Camera ...haha I have to always have a camera to capture pictures of outfits, my outfits, store finds, etc.

2. A spare pair of shoes in the trunk. I would recommend a chic pair of flats, because you never know when that heel may give up, or you have had your last blister

3. Dr. Scholl's insoles. They increase, what I like to call shoe stamina. Ever been at a bar or club and you've just had to stand for hours in a pair of stilettos, notice that the part that hurts the most is the ball of your foot? Some soothing gel insoles are a perfect solution. Most drugstores carry these

4. A handbag with internal pockets and zippers. From one girl who carries makeup, keys, camera, 2 phones, etc, I need to be able to separate my items in the bag instead of reaching into a bottomless pit

5. Lots and Lots of Costume Jewerly. Though fine jewelry is great (and pricey), I prefer costume pieces. I can create more looks with them, and heck, they are just way more fun!

What are some of your favorite spring fashion trends?
I'm obsessed with color blocking, the socks with sandals, and anything bright colors from clutches to nails, to pants

What types of stores do you typically shop at?
I typically shop in Express, New York & Company, Macy's, Bebe, Target, & White House
Black Market. I've started to branch to other stores like The Limited, Zara and Free People

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
I actually don't have a fashion icon. I find myself more inspired by other independent fashion bloggers now, than one mainstream person anyway

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
Keep it natural. You're in school, so you don't want to show up to an 8am class with a full M.A.C. face. It's fun to do it up more on the weekends for your parties. I would even say somedays eyeliner and lip gloss are all you need to give you a fresh face, non-sleepy look

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
Beyonce. I love her! She's my fav celeb, and I love the way she dresses. Plus she's curvy and it's a more realistic figure to dress than other celebs.

Anything else that you would like to add or suggest?
As a college student on a budget, you do want to make sure you invest in key items for interviews, depending on a company. You would want a quality skirt or pant suit, or at least a very nice business casual outfit. I would recommend places like Ann Taylor or the Limited for these pieces. I was in college at one point (seems far away now), so I know how the budget is. Just know that once you have a job and our out of school you'll have all the time in the world to buy all of the pieces you want!

Congratulations to the Class of 2011!! Many of you are no longer high students but will soon be college freshman. Congrats on your journey through high school! The next four years of your life are going to be some great, memorable years as you transition in college. I want to share a tip with you recent grads who will be entering college for the first time in the fall. This post will focus on summer time management. You may ask, what does that mean? Well, I want to share some advice with you about summer time fun and responsibilities.

While some want to relax and hang out at the beach with friends, you must always remember to finish all last minute paperwork relating to college. This summer a lot of you will begin receiving your financial aid award letters, housing assignments, orientation information and more. I just want to remind you all that before you begin to get too comfortable relaxing and hanging out, don’t forget to mail in the college paperwork. You don’t want to miss out on anything that will happen in the upcoming first year of college.

So with that said, make sure to keep an eye on your mailboxes and email accounts! Enjoy your summer break and be safe!

Summer Break..what to do???

I know most of you are already out for summer break. For those who aren't good luck! When you think of summer break, what comes to mind? Spending countless hours at the beach with friends, partying the night away (every night), traveling, summer school, etc. While some may have those thoughts in mind, others are stuck with the question, what the heck am I going to do this summer? For me, I have asked myself that just about every summer.

Last summer, I had recently came back from an internship at Walt Disney World (which I enjoyed and misses soooo much!) and had nothing in mind to do. I was so bored and kind of frustrated because there was absolutely nothing to do. What did I decide to do? I started this blog, June 15th to be exact! I decided that I wasn't going to waste my summer away with being a couch potato. I wanted to combine my loves and passions and go big with them which is how my blog was born. I will save those details for a future blog post.

What I'm trying to get at is, please don't sit around and waste your summer break away. I know sometimes it can be fun to doing nothing but where is that going to get you? Nowhere but your couch! Try something new and different. Maybe go rock climbing, travel to a place that you always wanted to go and maybe just want to explore a bit, volunteer your time in your community with local organizations. At the end of the day, you never know what new and fun opportunities may come your way!

Meet Jasmine
My name is Jasmine. I am 21 years old. I just finished my Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in English and History. My interests include writing, fashion, beauty, watching soccer and traveling. My goal in life is to become a journalist maybe some day working for a fashion publication. My blog is one of my stepping stones to accomplish this.

Describe your personal style
I would describe my personal style as girly but with a bit of edge. I get lots of inspiration from celebrities and blogs. My style also changes for the seasons. In winter my wardrobe isn't very colorful I like to wear blacks, grays, and khaki. In the summer I wear many bright colors. My day looks are quite casual while I like to wear dressier looks at night. I really enjoy following the trends of the current seasons.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
When I was really young I really enjoyed fashion. I was involved in some beauty pageants I was very particular on my outfits, everything had to match. I was the quintessential girly girl. I wore ruffled socks, mary janes, floral dresses and skirts. In terms of beauty products Lip Smackers were my addiction. As I got older I became less interested in fashion and beauty. I was really into sports and my style reflected this. I also went through a period where I wore very casual clothes like graphic tshirts, hoodies and jeans from American Eagle, Abercrombie and Hollister. Later on I became very interested in fashion when I entered university. My style was very influenced by Gossip Girl at this time. Colored tights, bows, headbands and ruffles were staples pieces in my wardrobe. Now my personal style is one of the major parts of my life.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
I always try to look for a deal. I am always looking for discount codes and coupons for stores I shop at. Every little percentage off or free gift is always a bonus. If I like a designer piece I always try to find an inspired piece which is much cheaper. Now there are stores like Forever21, Charlotte Russe and Topshop to give you runway inspired pieces for a much lower price.

One important tip for those on a budget is to decide if you really need that piece. Think wisely about your purchases. Are you going to wear this piece again if not is it really necessary. Try buying pieces you can mix and match and know you will wear again.

Don't be scared of clearance racks either. You never know what you might find.

What are your fashionista five must haves?
My five fashionista must haves are:
1. Nude Pumps- These should be an essential piece for everyone. These are the perfect pumps as they elongate the legs. Even the shortest people can look taller. They create such a nice line.

2.Skinny Jeans- Skinny Jeans are perfect for dressing up or for dressing town. I love to wear them with a basic v-neck and flats or dressed up with boots and blazer.

3. Blazer:Blazers are just not for business but for everyday now. I love to wear a blazer and tank for a night out or even a casual look.

4. Colored Bottoms: Colored Bottoms are definitely an essential for the spring and summer. Perfect for color blocking or just making a statement.

5.Bandage Dress: They have been around for a few seasons but I love them. They are perfect for a classy but sexy look. Perfect for those with curves.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?
I would love to buy all designer labels but unfortunately that is not in my budget instead I shop at budget friendly stores. My favourite stores are Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, Le Chateau and UrbanOG. These stores all provide trendy but budget friendly options.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
I have multiple fashion icons but I must say I always love what Kim Kardashian is wearing. Her outfits are always perfect. She never looks sloppy or not put together. Her glamorous look is very attainable as she uses basic pieces everyone can find. Kim embraces her curves and that inspires me. I also find inspiration from the British girl band The Saturdays. They always have interesting outfits that can always be recreated for the budget friendly fashionista.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
I would recommend on trying some of the budget friendly make-up lines. One of my favourite lines is Hard Candy. The price is cheap but the quality is great. I would suggest not overdoing make-up or you can look older than you really are. Nice and natural for the day.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
I would lend my assistance to Miss Britney Spears. She is notoriously known for her terrible wardrobe choices. I believe I could style her in a way where she could keep her country flair but look more put together and stylish. I would also enforce a bra to be worn with her outfits.

Student Loans: Money for College

**I recently got more emails and comments asking about student loans so I decided to repost this from one of my previous blog posts. This summer is the time when you should really sit down with your parents and evaluate and decide if you want to get a loan for college. Make sure to keep an eye on your mailboxes because this is the time when you will begin (if you haven't already) receive your financial aid award letters. **

One of my readers recently asked me a question about student loans and what are the pros and cons of them. I know many of you are thinking about getting student loans to help cover the costs of college. Don't be afraid of the thought of borrowing money!!! Loans are something that can either help or harm you (financially). It is something that you should carefully think about with your parents before signing the papers for a loan.

Most colleges will offer you a student loan(s) once you apply and are accepted into the university. It will be shown on your financial aid award letter. To receive a financial aid award letter, you must apply for financial aid through FAFSA.ed.gov . I would highly suggest that everyone apply for financial aid even if you don't think your family qualifies for it.

Students are allowed to apply and qualify for various types of loans. The most common loans for students are called the federal Stafford loan. They have various loan amounts and they depend on what year (freshman, sophomore, Jr. senior) you are in school. The higher you are, the more you are allowed to borrow in loans.

The main thing to remember about student loans is that you HAVE to pay the money back. I know from personal experience that you have to pay the loan back once you graduate or withdraw from college. They give you at least 6 months after college graduation before you have to start making payments. Every loan is different and some do have interest rates that you may have to pay for while in college or you can opt out of it. Below are a list of websites that I would recommend checking into to learn more about parent and student loans for college.

Growing up I was always interested in art and being creative. I loved to sketch, paint, draw..you name it! In college I decided on majoring in graphic design since I figured it would mesh well with my interests. I had always had a mini obsession with cosmetics and the different ways you could apply them to really transform your look. After graduating from college I decided to start my beauty channel in order to blend my love for makeup with a more artistic, creative approach.

Describe your personal style: I consider my style to be eclectic. I'm really influenced by "tribal" accessories and bohemian looks. But I try to integrate those styles into more sophisticated clothing to give it my own flair :)

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? As a child growing up in a rural area I was definitely a little rough around the edges. But, as a teenager I became fascinated by it! I love the artistic process that goes into creating a fashion line or a makeup look.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest? I would suggest taking advantage of some of the great finds at the drugstore! The great thing is you can always return them if they don't work out! Also save yourself some time and money by googling a specific product before you take the dive and purchase it. For instance, if I'm interested in trying out some cream blushes I'll always google "best cream blushes" and see what comes up. Many bloggers post about almost any product on the market and the customer reviews on websites like sephora and makeupalley can be extremely helpful. Sometimes I'll want to purchase a product but after seeing 500 really bad reviews I'll save myself the time and choose something else.

What are your top 3 makeup items must haves? Wow that's a toughie! I'd have to say that I would be lost without my Benefit Eye Bright Pencil. It has a million and one uses but I love it for neutralizing dark under eye circles. Second would be the Makeup Forever Mat Velvet + Foundation. This foundation gives you a flawless finish and keeps your skin from getting shiny all day long! And finally would be a great bronzer. I wear bronzer all year round to give my complexion a little warmth. Some of my favorites are Laura Mercier Dune Bronzer and BareMinerals Faux Tan.

What types of stores do you typically purchase your makeup essentials at? I've always loved Sephora and MAC...but I've really been getting into drugstore products lately. Covergirl has been coming out with some amazing products! I love their Lashblast mascara and Liquiline blast pencils! Maybelline has some really nice eyeshadow quads in their ExpertWear line, and I find that Revlon carries my favorite lipsticks and glosses!

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas? My biggest tip would have to be less is more! My best friend in college was a good concealer and a powder foundation! It was quick, evened out my skin tone, and didn't take all day to apply (which was great because I was usually late for class). For daytime, a little mascara and lipgloss can finish off your look.

If you want to get a little more adventurous with your eye makeup for nighttime, you might want to invest in a few good eyeshadow brushes. Having the right tools makes achieving the look you want so much easier! For beginners I would recommend a flat shader brush, a fluffy tapered crease brush, a fluffy brush for blending and a pencil brush to start off. If you have these four brushes you can create an endless amount of eye looks! Sigma Beauty has a wide variety of brushes like this at a very affordable price!

The Results are in!!!!

Classes and Finals exams are officially over and school is out!! I have been waiting so long to say that. However, I'm going to truly miss all of my friends and some of my professors over the summer break. My final exams weren't that bad and I managed to pass all of them!

My final GPA for this semester is a 3.1 and I'm soooooo proud of myself!! Mathematics was my toughest class (its not one of my favorites) this semester but I passed it so that's all that matters. Now it's time for me to kick back and relax. Starting next week, I will be posting more often that usual and I will continue to bring you all great content and interviews from a wide range of people.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste..so is your education...

Why waste your money paying for college if you don't go to class? Please go to class #students...a mind is a terrible thing to waste so is an #education ~ from my twitter account, @ABCsCollege

I have noticed some of my friends and classmates who choose to skip class and sleep in or do other non-productive things. I 100% disagree with skipping class. The only time I feel that a student should miss class is due to a personal illness, family reasons, or something else that is serious. I can understand if you miss class maybe twice or every now and then. But once a week or at least 4 times a month, that's not acceptable to me.

I'm not sure if I'm the only person who feels this way or not. I could never imagine failing all of my classes because I didn't go to class or pay attention. I don't have a quitters mentality. I know school can be overwhelming at times but through those times you have to find that fight in you to push through and overcome it.

Anytime I think of not going to class, I always think of all the money that my mother has invested in my college education. I don't mean $15, I'm talking about in the thousands. I couldn't imagine disappointing her on myself and wasting all of that money. If you come to the realization that college isn't for you, take some time off to think about your future and the things that you want to happen in the future. Really think things through before you make that decision.

Skipping class is a wast of time for the professors and anyone else that is involved in your education. There are millions of people out there in this world that would love to have to opportunity to obtain a college education. Stop being lazy and wasteful and go to class and be grateful for the education that you have because any day it can be easily taken away.

**Sorry if it feels like I'm preaching or angry, I'm not. It hurts me to see some people that I'm close with or encounter on a daily basis waste something that is so valuable and that is not easily obtainable for those who would love to have it. **

Meet Sabrina
I'm a sophomore studying Communications in Ottawa, but I'm originally from Toronto. I'm a second-generation Chinese-Canadian, so I get a lot of my inspiration from both sides of the world. I started my blog because of my interest in communications and social networking, but it quickly turned into a lifestyle rather than a hobby. This was another underlying factor of why I started my blog. I felt as though I hadn't achieved much, so I wanted to start a blog to get some sense of accomplishment by the time I turned 20. I'm still 19, by the way.

Describe your personal style
I'd actually call it undefined. I don't have just one style preference- I like to try out different trends. I could keep it simple one day with jeans and a sweater (and accessories, of course!), then be decked out in layers of vests, shirts, and socks. I also don't hesitate wearing heels to school. In general, I'm usually over-dressed and even quirky, but I think that's the fun in fashion.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
My family's pretty into fashion and shopping, so that influenced how I dressed. Like, I was wearing a fur coat when I was 3. In high school, most of my friends described my style as somewhere along the lines of "casual sophisticated", probably because I never wore sweats to school so I always appeared dressier. I honestly can't say that I've always been into fashion. In fact, up until 2 years ago, I absolutely hated shopping. I would basically wear whatever my mom bought me, which included a lot of V-necks and cardigans. Even she said that my style was fairly conservative. Now that I'm more into fashion, I tend to be a lot more experimental. It's definitely more daring. Recently, I've been really into the romantic/vintage/preppy look.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
I'm definitely a fashionista on a budget. While it would be nice to splurge on expensive brands, realistically it doesn't support my lifestyle. I rarely buy anything full-price. With a little patience, the item you want will almost always go on sale. Another great thing to do is to look for alternatives. I must admit, the hunt for that similar item is tough sometimes, but it's worth it. One thing I use to motivate myself is that the thought that trends are constantly changing, so buying versatile pieces is key. Mixing and matching can make it seem like you have an endless wardrobe.

What are your fashionista five must haves?
I suppose this depends on your personal style. For me, it would be a grey cardigan, a pleaded skirt, over-the-knee socks, and a casual button-down. I think these are great versatile staple pieces. Most of those that I mentioned are also great for layering. Oh, and an awesome pair of heels that give you an extra bounce in your step!

What are some of your favorite spring fashion trends?
I'm all about lace this season! It has a really refined, feminine look to it. But with the right styling, it can also be super edgy. There's a lovely simplicity to it when you have pieces like a lace shirt, but that same simplicity can also be used as a blank canvas to showcase things like a bold necklace.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?
Wherever the sales are! Seriously. Because I don't have a defined style, it allows me to get bits and pieces from a range of stores. If I want a simple tank, I'll go to Abercrombie. If I want something more edgy, I'll go to Guess. If I want something more professional, I'll go to Jcrew. It's really whatever I'm in the mood for. I venture into Marshall's (well, it's Winners in Canada) every so often, but I definitely have to be in the mood to dig through the racks. My wardrobe mainly consists of pieces from Forever 21 and H&M though. And Charlotte Russe is great for accessories.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
I don't really have any favourites actually. Maybe it's because I'm always changing my mind about style, so I look to a variety of people for inspiration. Currently, I look to bloggers like Keiko-Lynn for a romantic look, Kryz Uy for her versatility, and Claire Hart (Stolen From Grandma) for vintage appeal.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
I have nothing against mascara, eyeshadow, and eyeliner during the day...just when it starts to look like it's tattooed on. I suppose it's just a matter of knowing how to balance a good day look and doing whatever makes you feel comfortable. The only thing I can really suggest is Smashbox primer. Makeup goes on a lot smoother, and lasts a lot longer with that on.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
I'd probably go with Blake Lively. Then again, I kind of want to raid her closet more than I want to be her stylist. But I do think she has a neutral natural beauty that makes her look very versatile. She does effortless chic really great, but glams it up when she wants to. Though I do enjoy her preppy looks, I might want to try something that strays away from the Gossip Girl style. Maybe try to work with edgy accents to a neutral palette.

Anything else that you would like to add or suggest?
Being a college fashionista is whatever you make of it. A part of fashion is innovative and daring, but it's also expressing yourself. If you want to express yourself in a baggy shirt and jeans, that's being fashionable in its own sense. 'Effortless chic' is a great casual look that is often understated. If you want to try to make a bigger fashion statement, start with little things like adding bolder accessories. To me, being a college fashionista means adding personal creativity to outfits instead of being a carbon copy of anything deemed 'trendy".

Academic Programs:Choose Wisely

When looking into what college to attend, make sure that they have at least 3 different majors that you would be interested in pursing. This is important because if you change your mind on what you want to major in while in college, you don't want to have to change schools because you develop a new interest in another career field that your current school doesn't offer.

Example, if you decide to attend college and major in education but later decide that you want to major in social work. However, your current school doesn't offer a social work program. What do you do? Change schools or stick with the major (education) that you would rather not do anymore?

I would highly suggest to not stick with a major (or anything else) that you are unhappy with. It is best to weigh the pro's and con's first and then make a reasonable choice. Don't be afraid to change your major, it's not hard at all. Make sure to work with your advisor to help you transition into a new program.

Words of Advice:

When you are looking into what college to attend, make sure the school offers at least 3-4 different academic programs (major/course of study) that you would like to major in or have an interest in.
Research the possible careers within each academic program. Imagine yourself in those careers.
Research the job outlooks for those careers and majors.
ALWAYS make sure it is something that you really want to pursue. Don't do it because your parents, siblings, boyfriend, etc. want you to do it. Do it because you want to do it!
Choose wisely and make the best decision possible.

Take your time, one step at a time

Last week was a bit hectic for me. I had a overwhelming feeling of school work and working part time. It seems like time is going by so fast and I can't seem to catch up. I have found myself trying to get things done in time yet I have been neglecting myself. What do I mean by this you may ask?

When things get rough or too stressful, it's very important to take time for yourself. Make time to make sure you are okay and relax. I know this may be hard to do when you have deadlines coming up, test to study for, etc. but you can do it if you try.

I do so by laying on my bed and listening to my ipod. Music always seem to relax my mind, body and soul. I just lay their and think and find something funny to laugh at. Sounds silly, I know. Final exams are coming and this is usually the time when people begin to stress out and freak out. To avoid this just do these simple things:

Find a quiet room or place and lay down. Clear your mind and daydream about something that will relax you or make you laugh.
Listen to some smooth and easygoing music. Jazz music always does it for me :)
Talk with someone who doesn't mind listening to you and will help you sort out your cluttered mind.

I have a very eclectic style - I sometimes dress like look chic & sophisticated in black trousers and a great blazer, and other times I enjoy a frilly dress and flirty pumps! What you can always count on are bold accessories and pops of color!

I've always been interested in fashion & beauty, and really started to blossom into my style when I was sixteen. It was then that I really began to develop a personal style instead of trying to mimic other peoples.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
I highly recommend thrift shopping and going to affordable places like Forever 21 and H&M. I do think it's important to splurge on good, quality items; however, I understand that most college ladies are on a tight budget!

I love Anna Dello Russo and Rachel Zoe because they have great personal style. Also, they are both quite fearless with the way they dress and I really admire that.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
Keep it clean and easy. For the day just use some tinted moisturizer, blush, mascara, and lip gloss - and ALWAYS use sunscreen. Also, be sure to wash your face in the morning and before you go to bed. The key to looking fabulous is great skin!

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
One of the Kardashians. I secretly love them and their tv show - a total guilty pleasure!

I know that most of your are closing in on the final weeks of the school year. However, it's sad to say but it's not over yet! I have noticed that some of my friends and peers at school have started to slack off a bit because they begin to feel the summer breeze warm their bodies.

I don't want this to happen to any of my readers. I only want to see you all succeed. So I will continue to boost you up with some words of wisdom and motivating tips. Remember anytime that you feel like slacking off, remember all that you have worked for this semester. Just think, is it worth it? Do you want to waste it all away? I hope you all answer NO to those questions. Please tell me that you sis :)

Always set realistic goals and work towards achieving them. If you begin to notice a slip in your grades, go talk with your professors and ask them what can you do to improve your grades. Maybe you need extra credit assignments or maybe you need to take one thing at a time. I know things can get stressful at times but please, never give up.

Hard Work Pays Off.....

Mathematics has never been a favorite subject of mine. I'm not sure if it would ever be. It has always given me difficulty until now. I have a confession to make. I have never recieved a grade higher than a D in mathematics until coming to college.

I finally have a professor that knows mathematics and better yet, knows how to teach it to his students. He teaches in a way that everyone can comprehend the material covered. In previous years, my mathematics teachers weren't good at making sure everyone 100% understood the material taught. In return it would make me fall behind and struggle with my work.

This year I have dedicated myself to asking questions in class to problems that I don't understand fully. I have also gone to see a math tutor, and that really helped a lot! At midterm, I wasn't too shocked to find out that my current grade was a D. I told myself, that I HAVE to & WILL work harder to make a passing grade. I have done just that so far. Here are my test grades for my mathemtatics course this semester :

1st Test 58 - F
2nd Test 69 - D+
3rd Test 96 - A
4th Test 98 - A

As you can see, I stuck with my goal of passing and I have used different academic recourses on campus to help me reach my goal of passing this mathematics class.

I'm trying to let you know that please don't get discouraged when you recieve a failing grade on a test or quiz. Take time to evalute your mistakes and learn from them. If you need extra help (tutoring), get it! Never be afraid to ask questions in class or after class. Asking questions, will only make you successful! Trust me, I know.

Meet Channie
Hey, I'm Channie. I'm 15 years old and I'm from the Philippines. I am still in High School but I am almost graduating and I am planning to take Architecture and then Fashion Design. I have always loved Fashion, Art, and Music. Though people from my place are not that expressive when dressing, I don't take that as a hindrance from doing what I love. I've always wanted to have my own clothing line and I hope someday, I can build one! :)

Describe your personal style
My style is really uncertain. It depends on my mood, the weather, and the place I'm going to. My biggest frustration is that I live in a very warm country. I wished I lived somewhere cold or where there are 4 seasons. (haha) I am more of a rock, grunge-y girl but I really don't stick to that. I always strive to try new things especially when it comes to Fashion. I can go to girly-girl to rocker chic! It's really that unpredictable. I love to accessorize and I don't really follow trends.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
Yes, always! I remember joining Fashion shows when I was younger. I do modeling before. I was always exposed to Fashion and being in front of the public so I always made sure I looked pleasant. I also remember making a sketching pad with my designs and inspirations (fashion-wise) in it. And I am very conscious of how I look ever since. As for my style and the changes over the years, I think it's really affected by the progress of Fashion -- the trends and the like. Having to cope with the changes, I am now more open to new ideas and to creativity. I also had passion for Fashion, as long as I can remember. But I was in 6th-7th grade when I knew that Fashion is what I love and that I would pursue it.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
Invest in quality basic and classic pieces! because they never go out of style. And if you do follow trends, it's always better if you go for the cheap ones as not to waste money. Let's face it, trends come and go. They just stay for a little while and it's really not practical to spend so much on those. Always be open-minded. Never close your doors to innovation and creativity. Be practical! and don't be too brand-conscious! You can find good quality pieces in thrift stores! :)

What are your fashionista five must haves?
1. A little Black Dress - It's really versatile and you can wear it with anything you want.

2. A good pair of skinny jeans.

3. A good pair of heels (or black pumps)

4. A basic white tee.

5. A gorgeous hand bag. - of course, where would you place your stuff? ☺

I go to local department stores, SM and Robinsons. They really have good stuff at a reasonable price. Also, local brands like Freeway, Bayo, Kamiseta, Maldita, and WAGW. But of course, Forever21, Mango, Topshop, and Zara! They have a lot of to-die-for pieces! ☺ But I have to shop with a budget, I go online shopping or go to thrift stores and or I raid the department stores.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
Wow. This is hard. I have lots of style icons. But I would say Taylor Momsen.. I love her style. We have so much in common when it comes to style. And the superb Rachel Zoe! She's my absolute favorite! I always watch her show. She is someone I really look up too. Her style is amazing! I also like Katy Perry, the Gossip Girl cast, and some local fashionistas like Patricia Prieto and Joanna Ladrido. I have lots of inspirations though. And I most of the time get them from fellow bloggers, Chictopia, Vogue, and local Fashion Magazines.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
Never be afraid to experiment. And invest in good make-up! ☺Know what suits your skin type and skin color. And always remember to BLEND.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
I would style Katy Perry because she is extraordinary. She is not afraid to try new things and she doesn't let the negative feedbacks of others affect her and her style. I mean look at her! :D

BE YOURSELF. and be confident. You can absolutely pull anything off with confidence and a genuine smile! Never let others dictate you and never let them stop you from doing what you want!

Tuesday Tip of the day: Punctuality

I'm not one to have many pet peeves but one that really bothers me is when people are late. I have always been taught that it is very important to be punctual. It's not good to hold people up or cause any inconvenience for them. I will offer a few quick tips to help with you become more punctual.

At the beginning of the day (or the night before), make a list of things to do and set your priorities. This can help you become clutter-brain free throughout the day.
Take time to plan each activity and give yourself ample time to complete each task before starting on the next. This will also eliminate any mistakes or setbacks to your schedule.
If you have planned an activity, meeting, dinner, event, etc in advance, make sure to schedule less important things around it. Don't plan anything around the time of any big event! For example, don't plan a nail/hair appointment at 1pm and be scheduled to attend a friend's wedding at 2pm. Who knows what could happen within that time frame that could cause you to miss or be late to your friend's wedding.
Last but not least, if something unexpectley happens that may cause you to be late, make sure to call the person with whom you are meeting with to inform them of your possible tardiness.

Career Spotlight: Joah Spearman

Meet Joah
I was born in Texas and lived outside of the Fort Hood Army base until I was around 7 years old then my mom and two older brothers (I didn't grow up with my dad since I was around 3 years old) moved to Greenville, SC where we lived until I was a junior in high school. We moved back to Killeen, Texas, where I graduated from high school before attending the University of Texas at Austin (majoring in public relations and minoring in Japanese).

Currently, I have about five professions. I'm a communications consultant for startup companies and Fortune brands like FedEx; I own Sneak Attack, a pop-up sneaker boutique in Austin; I was recently appointed to the Austin Music Commission by the City Council and also serve as the lead of volunteer efforts for the new nonprofit Austin Music People ; and I am an author, just finishing up my second book on Austin's live music scene called Indisputable: A Fan's Guide to the Live Music Capital. In my spare time, I run avidly - training for the Livestrong/Nike Marathon in Feb. right now, love to go to concerts and travel frequently.

Growing up what career did you always dream of fulfilling and why?
I've never been the type to have one single career. I've always thought of myself as a renaissance type guy who had multiple professions and skillsets and maintain networks in sports (I worked for the Texas Longhorns for four years), the corporate world, music, politics (I was the speechwriter to FEMA after Hurricane Katrina) and others. My dream job is probably to be the Chairman of the International Olympic Committee.

What did you major in while in college? Why did you choose that course of study?
Public Relations, to me, was a great way to learn more about business and use my communications skills at the same time. It's been a great degree to have not so much for the classes that I took, but because of the options it opened up for me in politics, media, entertainment, etc.

Will you describe your undergraduate experience at UT Austin? What type of student were you? Were you active on campus?
I never was the kind of student to focus on grades. I had plenty of friends and classmates like that and they don't seem to have the professional accomplishments that I've had because they were too narrowly focused. I'd rather go to class, remember what I felt was essential or interesting, work two jobs in my spare time for money and professional contacts (I had about 10 internships during college), and be on the exec board for multiple organizations to learn more about leadership and give back to the community. I helped raised over $100,000 for the Children's hospital here in Austin while I was in college by being the head of a group called Dance Marathon.

You were the first in your immediate family to graduate from college, describe that accomplishment and how did your family feel about it?
It was never a question in my mind that I would graduate from college even though no one in my family had done it really. Ever since I was around 8 years old I started telling my mom and everyone around that I was going to college, I even picked UT as a target school when I was 11 or 12. The most exciting part was applying for scholarships my senior year of high school and winning around $100,000 worth of them. Paying for college was the only thing that concerned me, so it was a great victory to pull that off and know that I didn't have to rely on anyone for it except myself. My family isn't like some of my friends' where there are doctors, lawyers, accountants, teachers, etc. around. There aren't any. They all do odd jobs or under-paying jobs. My mom is a lifetime secretary. Graduating let them know that there was more available to me, not just after graduating, but for the rest of my life.

How was your transition from being a college student to becoming a young professional in "the real world"?
I started working full-time as a college sophomore. Literally, I would work for the UT Athletics Department in their media relations office up to 40 hours a week if you count all the games I helped with. So the transition, come graduation time, was easy because I was already used to spending a good amount of my time and energy toward something that paid me and interested me. The biggest transition was just moving from Austin to D.C. to take my first big job, which was to be the head of speechwriting for FEMA two weeks after Hurricane Katrina right after Michael Brown resigned.

You are the author of "Real Role Models", will you talk more in detail what the book is about?
Real Role Models was sort of my attempt at writing a book that could speak to my younger self who was trying to chart a path to college and professional success. There are thousands, maybe millions, of young Black kids who are determined to succeed but need a little push or a bit of affirmation that what they're doing is right. Real Role Models was an attempt to relate to young people and give them a leg up in life.

Why did you decide to write, Real Role Models?
I never want to do anything that lacks purpose. Real Role Models wasn't a book I thought would become a bestseller before I thought it'd be a book that reached people and helped them to succeed, even if just by introducing them to some people they could point to and say, "so someone has done this before, I can do it too."

What advice would you give to anyone looking to pursue a college education?
College isn't for everyone, but everyone who goes gets something out of it that can't be captured elsewhere, be it learning or networking or leadership skills. I'd simply advise people looking to go to college to plot a course from today forward that makes sure it's a top priority. A college education isn't something everyone is blessed to receive and if you can get one, don't take it for granted.

Anything else that you would like to add?
I highly recommend people constantly read profiles, biographies, etc. to see examples of people they admire and look to take lessons from their lives. There's no point in re-inventing the wheel.

Made it to the Finish Line!!!

I did it!!!! I am so happy and proud of myself. I completed the race this morning and I'm still smiling with excitement!!!!! Trust me this wasn't easy but it was definitely worth it. All together everyone raised over $25,000 and it will be donated to a local autism organization.

It was very cold this morning and it made me a bit nervous because I don't really like running when its freezing outside but I zoned out and kept my mind off of it. As all the runners lined up for the race, I knew I was in for a good morning run.

POP!!!! The horn sounded and we were off down the hill. I must say, there were a lot of hills and turns in this race but I was prepared for every single one of them. I don't remember my exact finish time but I was glad to know that I wasn't the last person to finish...well I was far from the last but still..lol!

It felt good completing something that I put my heart and mind into and never gave up. It further proved to myself that I'm a strong, dedicated, motivated and hard working person. It makes me want to go out and compete in other races, walks and other things. I want to continue to donate and raise money for various illnesses and causes out there around the world.

I will go ahead and end this post now before I start to get emotional and cry lol! Seriously, I will lol! Overall I had a lot of fun and I'm going to make it a mission to continue to do races likes these set goals for myself and work hard to achieve them.

What's next for me? I am going to be raising money for and walking in the National MS Society Walk here in my North Carolina. I personally know a person who is going through the early stages of MS( multiple sclerosis) and I'm doing it for her and everyone else who has been diagnosed with MS. Wish me luck and I hope to see all of my readers doing things that they set out to do and never giving up. Good luck!

As you all know I mentioned awhile ago that I was training for a 5K race for autism. Well, tomorrow is the big day and I'm so excited and pumped for it. I'm trying to stay focused on other things so that I won't get too anxious or nervous. I have a positive feeling about the race!

Spring Cleaning: Out with the Old, In with the New

It's that time of year again when spring rolls in and everyone starts there spring cleaning. I haven't done much cleaning but it's about time I start. No, I don't mean dusting and scrubbing down all the icky mess in my room. I'm talking about letting negativity and things that bring you down. It's time to let go of those things and bring positive energy into the mix.

Sometimes when you have too much negativity with you it tends to bring you down and makes you become a negative person. We all can agree that we have let that negative person or thing ruin our day. I'm not one to let that go on too long.

I want to see all of my readers and everyone around the world succeed and become happy. If you have someone or something that is negative in your life, spring clean it right out of here! It's best to let it go now before it takes over your life. Be free of negativity and welcome in positivity.

Negative things tend to bring you down, make you feel bad about yourself, cause you to do bad & hurtful things, make you depressed or angry. Positivity tends to bring happiness, safety, enjoyment, success, new friends, great grades, new experiences, fun and much more! Now think, which one would you rather have in your life?? I personally choose POSITIVITY!! I hope you all choose it as well. :)

Make the right choices in life and you will notice that you are on the right road towards success!

Meet Diane
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I am Italian by way of Central America. My mom emigrated to the States from Guatemala. She is best friend and partner in crime.

I'm a rabid Trojan. Received both my undegraduate degree (Literature and Psychology) and my master's in Broadcast Journalism at USC. Met my wonderful boyfriend there when we were both 18. He is a lawyer but doubles as my photographer for the blog.
Currently I work at Yahoo! in marketing. Most of my career has been at dot coms but I've also worked in aerospace and higher education. Still not sure what I want to be when I grow up but my life long dream has been to write a book. My blog is hopefully a step in that direction.
I love food, learning, scotch, my friends and laughing.

Describe your personal style
It's a hodgepodge. I am definitely influeced by where I grew up---Hollywood. I love glamour and standing out and making a statement with my clothes. I follow designer trends closely and try to reinterpret what's hot on the runways but works in my daily life. And I love mixing high with low.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.

I was. My mom always tells me that even before I could talk, I had very strong opinions about not only what I wore but what she wore. I've just always had an eye for proportion. My stepfather had a chain of clothing boutiques so I think I picked it up by osmosis. I've also had a subscription to Vogue since I was 16.
I wore a uniform for 12 years growing up so I think that's why I love accessories so much. They were the only way for me to express my individuality.
I was a teenager in the early 90s so it was all about floral dresses and grunge and combat boots. Actually it was everything the fashionable 20 somethings are into now. Once I got to college, I think my style became a little bit more classic and refined. More USC, if you will.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
They are soooo lucky. Today there is so much great design available at reasonable price points. I love Forever 21, H&M and Zara. None of those were an option 10 years ago when I was in school.
I am also a big resale shopper. It's an incredible way to start buying high end designer pieces for a fraction of the retail price. Plus half the fun of shopping is the hunt.
I say invest in high quality classics and go nuts buying the trendy stuff on the cheap. Focus on cool accessories like belts, hats and necklaces that can reinvent what's already in your wardrobe.

What are your fashionista five must haves?
A pair of jeans that you feel like hot and thin in. A pair of showstopper heels that you feel powerful in. A tailored pantsuit that you can wear seperately or together. A gorgeous purse that is versatile and functional but shows off your personality. And a necklace that makes a statement and goes with most things in your closet.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?
I shop everywhere and anywhere. Mostly the stores I mentioned above though I also love BCBG and DVF and Marc Jacobs. Lately, J Crew has been turning my head quite a bit too. In LA, I love resale places like Designer Labels, the Address Boutique, Wasteland and Crossroads.
I rarely buy things full price. I worked in retail in high school and cannot bear to pay the mark up.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
I love how Gwyneth Paltrow wears clothes---that all American casual elegance. And good lord the legs. On the other end of the spectrum, I adore me some J Lo. The glitz and drama and theatricality of how she dresses is very me, very Leo. Plus I can relate to her coloring and figure much more. There's also more obscure fashion girls that I adore like Taylor Tomasi Hill and Joanna Hillman.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
At your age, less is more. Play up your best asset. Have fun with color and experiment. But keep it light.
Most importantly, focus on getting into a skincare routine. Don't skimp on cleanser, wear suncreen and start using retinols. Take it from me, wrinkles are a bitch so protect your skin now.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
I've actually done a little bit of styling since starting my blog and I'd love to get my hands on Britney Spears. Good god all that money and she still manages to look so low rent. I would love to help her elevate her taste level. She needs every day pieces that are sexy and stylish but fit her well and don't look like they are from the juniors department.

Anything else that you would like to add or suggest?
Take chances, don't be afraid to fail---in fashion and life. The worst that can happen is you learn from your mistakes and are even stronger for it.
And a line my mom always says: you will never be this young again. Enjoy it.

Now Hiring: Internships!!!

If you have been on the job/internship hunt, this is the best time to start looking. There are plenty of places that are hiring right now. A lot of them are looking for eager, hard - working, college students to employ for the summer months. I always recommend that you begin your summer employment search as early as November. However, since that has passed, now is the time. Please don't delay because employers are already starting to hire people now. If you wait too long then your chances of getting a summer job are slim to none.

I recently came across this internship search website that offers a variety of internships around the USA. It is called, One Day, One Internship http://www.onedayoneinternship.com/

I would recommend that everyone check this website out and give it a try. You can search for specific internships in your area or your chosen field. One more tip that I will give is, if you can't land a paid job or internship, don't give up! Still look for volunteer and unpaid internships, it's still a job and you will have more work experience and develop new skills and knowledge. Who knows, you may even land a paid job after you complete it!

Have you ever thought of something that you are really passionate about? Me personally I have. When I was a freshman in college I thought to myself, "what do I want to do as a career?' At first I couldn't think of one single thing to do. So I made a list of things that I was passionate about and good at. Below is the list that I came up with.

Education
Fashion
Teaching
Photography
Cooking
Creative writing
Traveling

To make a long story short, I chose to major in fashion design and later switched it to mass communications with a concentration in journalism.

This is something that I would recommend anyone who is struggling with deciding what they want to major in while in college.It is easier to major in something that you are passionate about and enjoy learning and doing. Another major important tip is to never choose to major in something just because your best friend or your parents want to do it. Do it because you really want to do it. Just think, you wouldn't want to major in chemisty if you aren't good in science, trust me you will be highly stressed and run the chance of failing.

How to form a healthy & happy relationship while in college.

Forming a healthy relationship with a person is the same as forming one with yourself. Be completely comfortable with who you are first. I mentioned one sided relationships above, one sided relationships consists of one person doing all the work to keep it going. If you send him a text message at 11am, there is no need to send 5 more by 11:30am because he has not responded to you. College is a lot of work, and both parties have to stay focused on school work and extracurricular activities.

The first rule is to be sure that you both want the relationship and understand what you are expecting from one another. Relationships are like jobs and if you find that you or your mate have a hard time keeping one, it may be a good time to just "date". Dating does not mean committed relationship. It simply means that you are interested in seeing more of one another. Try to be honest as you can with each other. I know that sometimes you really like 2 girls or 2 boys, and do not want to tell the other one because you may loose them. I also know that it sounds selfish because it is, but that's college life. That is also how someone gets hurt and that person could be you. If you are not ready for the whole relationship deal, be up front. Discuss what you are looking for and why you are looking for it. If the person does want what you want, then you have to move one and move slower.

Thursday Tip of the Day!!!

I had this tip on my mind lately and I just wanted to spread the word to all of my readers. Have you ever wanted something so bad but you never got up and tried? Are you scared of failing? Well, if so NEWSFLASH!!!!

It's time to do it NOW! If you have something on your mind and you want to go out and do it (example, taking a kickboxing class, writing a book, learning a new sport, etc.), please do me a favor and go for it. I know sometimes we all may second guess ourselves or may not be the most confident person in the world however, if you never go out and at least try, how will you know if you can succeed at it?

If you know me, I tend to develop new goals each week and I make sure to set out and achieve them. I have succeeded and failed at some. However, I have never that get me down. I quickly pick myself up and try again or I do things a little bit differently so I will be on the right road towards success.

I recently joined a running group at my college (for those of you out there, quick fact about me, I don't like running but I want to try something new.) My sisters laughed at the idea of me participating in a 5K marathon race. While I ignored them, I signed up for it and I'm now training for the race which is less than a month away...Yikes!! I have been training weekly with some of my friends (some old and new) and with a trainer. It has been a long, hard, tough, exciting, new, different but yet fun experience. It is actually something that I have always wanted to do but was too afraid and kinda nervous to try it out.

The race is on April 2nd and I'm sooooo ready for it! I feel prepared and better than ever. With that said, if I can set out and try something new (that I was afraid to do), so can you! My tip of the day and quick exercise for you all is to, come up with a list of 5 things that you have always wanted to do or maybe recently thought of doing. Research each one and organize a plan of action to reach your goal.

Meet Jamila!!
I am from Charlotte, NC. I love reading, writing and performing poetry, blogging, thrifting, snuggling, and snacking...not particularly in that order! :)

Growing up what career did you always dream of fulfilling and why?
Growing up, I thought I was going to be a little bit of everything. The most bizarre was a marine biologist (Free Willy was my favorite movie at the time, lol!). I also considered entertainment law, coffee-shop owner, professor...a whole number of things that I have no business doing! All of those careers fit what my interests were at the time, what I generally liked, and what I felt that I'd be good at. Once I got to college, I was able to dip my toes into each (via biology, philosophy, sociology courses) and slowly realized that some things just weren't for me!

Think about your high school days, what senior superlative would you give yourself?
Ha, I actually remember my senior superlative. I got "most likely to be President" (I was Student Body President my senior year), Most popular, and most likely to succeed. I was doing a lot.....thought I was big stuff! :)

Did you get into your 1st choice college? If not, how did you take the rejection and how did you re-group and continue to pursue your higher education?
No, I didn't get into my first choice. I was devastated. I cried for a good few days, and then picked myself up and said "if they don't want me, I don't want to go there!" I am SO glad that I didn't get into that college, because it wasn't the best place for me. I ended up exactly where I needed to be. I couldn't recognize or understand that at the time.

What did you major in while in college? Why did you choose that course of study?
I am double majoring in Dramatic Arts and Sociology. I chose these two majors because love both of them. I have always had a passion for theatre and performance, but let the opinions of others convince me that it wasn't "practical." I decided to do Sociology as a back-up plan, and fell in love with it. I plan to pursue a career as a professional theatre director, so both majors have helped me solidify my decision.

I personally feel as though you should start networking while still in college, would you agree and why?
I think it depends. If you know that you want to pursue a career in Law, it's probably smart to get a summer internship at a Law Office. If you want to be a painter, you should just paint. College isn't just for folks wanting to pursue "professional" or "corporate" careers. If your passion is poetry, write all the poetry you can. This isn't a career that pays tremendous amounts, but if it's what you love, then it should be worth the sacrifice. That's the risk you take.

You have a blog "College Curlies" how did you get that started and why?
I started the blog last year, in response to a lot of questions that I got about my natural hair. I did a lot of research online (via blogs and forums), and felt that there weren't that many outlets for the younger, time-crunched, fabulous and frugal folks out there. College Curlies was my response to that.

What do you like most about blogging?
I love feeling like my journey is helping others on theirs. I love that I can encourage people to love themselves just the way they are.

What advice would you give to people wanting to pursue a higher education?
Do what you love. It will come to you. You will end up exactly where you need to be. Go for what you want. Don't let anyone try to tell you who or what you should be. You know you best! It sound so cliche, but seriously--it's the advice I wish I had gotten four years ago!

Anything else that you would like to add?
Yes! Find a collective of people who love and support you for who you are and what you're doing. We're too young to be surrounded by negative energy. Find those positive forces in your life and stick to them!

Guest Post ~ Simple & Easy Dorm Room Meals!!

Most college students try to live as inexpensively as possible since they are often surviving on a budget of parent provided allowances, scholarships, and student loans. Unfortunately, cheap living sometimes translates into unhealthy eating. I can remember eating more than my fair share of Pop Tarts and Ramen noodles. However, there are healthy options that are also affordable.

Since most students do not have large blocks of time to dedicate to culinary activities, I am sharing two simple, inexpensive, and healthy recipes that will provide multiple meals.

The first recipe is for vegetable soup. Now, you are probably thinking (with not too fond memories) about the canned soup of elementary school days. But, veggie soup can be very tasty and lasts a long time – which is great during exams! I simply start off with low-sodium chicken (or beef broth), throw in some fresh potatoes, canned tomatoes, a bit of tomato paste, and some frozen mixed veggies. You can also add carrots, celery, or any other hearty vegetable that won’t turn to mush in the soup. I will admit that I added a piece of smoked turkey (about $1.00) to give the flavor some depth. But you can season it to your liking. Pair the soup with grilled cheese and you might experience a childhood flashback but it will be all good!

Next is spaghetti and meatballs. Again, the simplicity of the childhood dish makes this a great choice for a busy college student. In order to make the dish more “grown up”, I opt for turkey meatballs (you only need about ½ the bag), whole wheat spaghetti, and a good quality sauce. You can make the sauce seem a bit more homemade by adding a splash of red wine and a handful of fresh spinach leaves. This dish costs less than $5 to create and makes 3-4 servings.

If I knew then what I know now, my college dining choices would have been much healthier.

I remember being that age and dating is fun, exciting, refreshing, captivating, heart breaking, devastating and full of surprises, all at the same time. You get so caught up in the rush of things. It feel as if you have to move at the speed of lightning, when life has really just begun. Dating that turns into a relationship is a good thing, as long as the relationship is thought out and not one-sided. One sided situation get very ugly, very fast. Dating is great, but when you are under 21, getting into a relationship may not be what is best for you because you are still learning what are looking for in a mate.

"Dress Like a Fashionista" ~ Laura

I’m a 19 year old college sophomore and sociology major. I’m really interested in consumption patterns and what makes certain items popular. I love the color yellow, photography, and cooking. Describe your personal style
I would describe my style as a little bit rock n’ roll, a little bit girly, and a little bit preppy. I can fall into any one of those categories; it really just depends on the day.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
I’ve always had an appreciation for clothing. I dress up no matter where I’m headed. When I was little, my parents would tease me and say, “we’re just going to the grocery store, not a fashion show.” My style has always been pretty preppy; I’ve always loved striped shirts, cardigans, bright colors, and fedoras, but my style has been growing more edgy lately. I’ve grown to appreciate black more, and I love anything with an exposed zipper, or made out of black lace or leather.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
1) If you don’t see something you like at a price you can afford, make it or check a thrift store. I started making headbands because I really wanted a Jennifer Ouellette black bow headband, but didn’t want to spend $80 on one.

2) Don’t be afraid to ask your relatives if they have any clothing they no longer want. I scored my Burberry scarf when my grandma was going to give it away to charity.

3) Be nice to the sales people. If you’re polite sales people will often tell you when that top you’ve been eyeing will go on sale, offer to order you a size that has run out, or maybe even honor your coupon that expired the day before you came to the mall.

What are your fashionista five must haves?
I can’t live without ankle booties, leggings, tuxedo vests, my vintage leather jacket, and some sort of hair adornment. I must also add cardigans to this list (even though that makes six must haves). I never leave my dorm room without a cardigan.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?
I love J.Crew, Alternative Apparel, GAP, and Theory for basics. However, thrift stores are my favorite place to shop. There’s something so exciting about not knowing what you’ll find. I love Painted Bird in San Francisco.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
I really love Minnie of the Stylish Wanderer, due to her love of chunky sweaters and fun baubles. I’m also a huge fan of Olivia Lopez of Lust for Life. I wish I could master towering heels and maxi dresses as well as her. This list wouldn’t be complete without Carrie of Wish Wish Wish. The pictures on her blog always make me feel like I’ve traveled back and time and her video “WishWishWish You Were Here” is the best thing I’ve seen on a blog in a long time.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
If your eyes are a little puffy or tired and you don’t have much time to do your makeup, try lining your lower lash line with a pale pink, gold, or silver shadow. Light violet shades also work well. You can use an eyeliner pencil or shadow and an eyeliner brush. Either way lining your eyes with a little color is an easy way to brighten up your whole face.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
I would pick Rachel Bilson. She seems like she would be fun to work with and her sense of style is impeccable

Meet Carizza

I am Carizza Chua from the Manila, Philippines. I studied at University of Santo Tomas from grade school to college! I am graphic/web/fashion designer by day and an online blogger at night. I love collecting porcelain dolls and listening to Japanese music..

How would you describe your personal style
I love Japanese-inspired fierce but cute style. Though Harajuku and Lolita style are awesome, I always go for wearable outfits, something not so attention-grabbing and I could wear here in this tropical country.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
As a kid, I used to collect paper dolls and drew different sketches of wedding gowns. As I grew up, I got hooked into different Japanese anime, but I started to get conscious about my appearance during high school. I got addicted into heavy and loud accessories and I also do nail art at that time, which is apparently not allowed in school so by the time I got a memo from our school principal, I stopped.

It all started over again during 2007, when I planned to open an online business. I sell Japanese style fashion clothes, accessories, shoes and contact lens at www.mysparkleshop.com

From there, I've learned how to mix and match outfits and I was able to get clothes for a lower price!

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
There's nothing better than your mother's closet. Borrow clothes from your mom, sister or cousin. Vintage is cool and fun. You'll get a chance to be more creative and you could save money at the same. If your mom wasn't a fashionista when she was younger and there's nothing great in her closet, you can always try exploring the thrift shops in your area.

What are your fashionista five must haves?
Fierce wedges, a chain bag, a black dress, red/fuchsia lipstick, and a black blazer/jacket.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?
I usually shop at different bazaars, Forever 21, and on my own shop!

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
If there's someone who had a great influence on my style, it would be Ayumi Hamasaki. She's a Japanese singer and model. I'm an avid fan since high school! I love her cause she's not tall to become a model but she always carry her style perfectly!

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
Less is beautiful. Don't put too much makeup, choose a peach/light pink lipstick and blush for a fresher and younger looking glow. Concentrate more on your eye makeup. Put a thin line of eyeliner to have brighter eyes and a little concealer for those eye bags.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
Angelina Jolie! Omg, I don't know if I could even handle it. I might just faint in front of her gorgeousness. XD

One thing that some people may overlook or not think of when going off to college are college textbooks and other school supplies expenses. Some books can range from $20 - $200 or more. I know some of you may think, why are these books so expensive? I wonder the same thing sometimes. I wish that we don't have to pay for the textbooks but WE DO!! I remember back in middle and high school, we didn't have to pay a penny for the books. We only had to pay for them if we damaged them or lost it.

I have been researching and asking around about ways that I can save money on my college books and I finally found it! Campusbookrentals.com is a good website that offers a wide range of college textbooks at very reasonable and affordable prices. The website allows you to rent the textbook instead of purchasing the book at an expensive price.

I personally used the website and I have to say that I LOVE IT! !!My books arrived to my dorm within 5 days and they were in a very good condition. I rented 4 of my textbooks from the website and my total price came under $200 including shipping.. If I purchased those same 4 textbooks at my campus bookstore, my total price would have been around $450. A big difference right? Yes! I told a lot of my friends about this and they love it as well.

I would definitely recommend that if you are on a tight budget when it comes to saving money for college or while in college, make sure to check out campusbookrentals.com to save money on your books. It will definitely save you money and stress.

Growing up what career did you always dream of fulfilling and why?
I never knew what I wanted to be when I was growing up...it changed every year, I wanted to be a mechanic at one point, an artist, a dancer, it was never ONE thing I wanted to do...

Think about your high school days, what senior superlative would you give yourself?
MOST CONFUSED!

Did you get into your 1st choice college? If not, how did you take the rejection and how did you re-group and continue to pursue your higher education?
I never went to college, I never wanted too...I barely graduated high school..lol
I hated school and the thought of another 4 years of it DID not appeal to me..I knew college wasn't the only option for Rachel, I wasn't a good student and college would have been a disaster for me and my parents wallet.

You have a beautiful jewelery and art collection, how did that come about?
I decided to take a break from painting a few years ago and jewelry just seemed to be a natural transition for me, I didn't know it would turn into a profitable business, but I'm glad it did, I really enjoy what I'm doing.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to pursue a college education or still in high school?
Honestly...unless you have a clear idea of what you want to do, what your talent is, and how much money you want to be making to be happy after college you need to take a break after high school and pursue other options, don't waste your parents money or your time going to college just because you were told you have to go...be productive and think outside the box..take some time to see what you really want to be doing..what kind of lifestyle you want after college..do you want to be just another employee? or do you wanna be a boss?

Re-Post: Prioritize: What's More Important???

As a college student you will hear the word, prioritize a LOT!! Trust me, I have! Before I didn't really realize the importance of organization of the things in my life. One semester when I was putting my social life before my academics, I really learned first hand why organization is needed. My grades slipped a bit and I began to go off track.

I had to sit down and make a list of everything that was important to me and prioritize my life. Academics quickly moved up on my list and ended up at #1. My social life and everything else fell into place. By doing so, I was no longer failing in my classes nor was I stressed out.

In college it is important to grow up and mature and focus on whats more important. I would hate to see anyone fail out of college because they didn't have their priorities straight. It's really not hard, all you have to do is make the time to sit down and organize them.

FAFSA: Financial Aid!!

Now that most of you have gone through the admissions process and gained acceptance to your college choices, it's time to think about how you are going to finance your education. Some people have money saved up specifically for college while others may not. Cutting the cost of your college education can be very simple if do some research, planning and saving.

There are many websites that provide a search engine for various types of scholarships, grants and student/parent loans. It is key to make very wise decisions and talk with your parent or guardians about this. I would advise everyone to talk with your teachers, supervisors, co-workers, school guidance counselors, etc. about how to pay for your college education.

Make sure to check with the county and state that you currently reside in to see if they have any scholarships for high school seniors. Sometimes they may offer scholarships or grants to students who reached a high achievement while in high school. If you are a member of a specific church, they a lot of the times offer scholarships to help you pay for school.

So make sure to check around and do your research. Lastly, I would suggest that everyone apply for financial aid through FAFSA. I know many of you have heard college admissions counselors talk to you about this. This is very important if you want to receive some type of financial aid. I'm Tamia Stinson from Cincinnati, OH. Currently, I blog at TheStyleSample.com, publish and edit Style Sample magazine, and work as a freelance graphic designer and social media consultant.

Growing up what career did you always dream of fulfilling and why?
When I was little, I wanted to be a dancer, an interior designer, and a dinosaur--preferably all at once!

Think about your high school days, what senior superlative would you give yourself?
I've been collecting fashion magazines since elementary school, so I probably would've been named "Most Likely to Start a Magazine." Who knew?

You are the founder of "Style Sample blog" why did you start blogging?
I started The Style Sample a few years ago as a creative outlet. I was working in a corporate environment, and felt like I needed a way to play around with design and fashion in a more public forum. Then I discovered how much I appreciated the community aspect of blogging, and the idea for Style Sample magazine was born!

You started the blog in November 2008 and now in 2010 it is very popular and successful, why do you think your blog has grown to become so successful?
When it comes to blogging, I think the real trick is just to keep at it. It's easy to get burnt out and it's a lot more work than people think, but if you continually create great content, it pays off.

You also publish Style Sample Magazine, how did that come about and why?
Embarrassingly enough, the magazine was originally supposed to be an extension of my blog, and completely centered on me. After some research, I was inspired by the talent and ambition within the fashion blogging community and decided to make the magazine a platform for bloggers to gain experience and exposure for their writing, photography, art, and entrepreneurial ventures. Thank goodness the first idea didn't pan out!

You blog and write about fashion, how would you describe your personal style?
It's an ever-changing mix of downtown casual, menswear style, and vintage glamour.

If you could give any celebrity a makeover, who who you choose?
Hmm...Mariah Carey! The woman has the voice of an angel and the fashion sense of a cheap harlot. Come to me, Mimi...I only want to help you.

What is the best part about blogging for you?
"Meeting" people with similar interests all over the world!

What are your 3 fashionista must haves?
Standout shoes (preferably heels), dramatic jewelry, and a tailor for everything else.

If you could have any other job in the world, what would it be?
I still haven't gotten over my desire to be a Solid Gold dancer.

To anyone looking to pursue a college education, what advice would you give them?
1. Learn how to study. I didn't get it right until my 3rd year, but it made a world of difference in my grades/GPA. 2. Make connections. Form and maintain relationships with your fellow students, your professors and TAs, your counselors, and make sure you intern/co-op as much as you can.

What's next for you?
I'm working on finding regular fashion and features editors for the magazine--if you know anyone who would be interested, get in touch--and growing my freelance clientele.

Anything else that you would like to add?
One thing I always like to stress is the importance of taking the initiative. If you have an idea, do some research, figure out what needs to be done, and go for it! If it doesn't work out, you've learned something new. If it does work out, the sky's the limit!

Old Friends, New Friends

Question, how many of you still keep in touch with people whom you grew up with? How many of you keep in touch with friends during breaks (summer/winter break)? I know some of you keep in touch with friends well while others not so much. Me and a friend of mine recently had a conversation about keeping in touch with old and new friends.

I recently transferred schools and I noticed in the beginning at my current school that I wasn't keeping in touch with some of my friends back at my previous schools. It wasn't that I was ignoring them, I simply got caught up with being at a new school, around new people and trying my best to adjust.

I think it is very important to keep in touch with all of your good friends. I'm not saying that you have to keep in touch with everyone but keep in touch with those good friends that you have shared great memories with. I personally think that fun, positive and healthy friendships are very important. Just think about it, you don't want to feel abandon by old friends from your past. So to everyone reading this post, think about some people that you have had a great relationship with. Have you keep in touch with that person? When was the last time you all spoke? If everything is positive and good between you and that person, reach out to them and catch up.

Dress Like a Fashionista ~ Diya

I recently interviewed fashion blogger, Diya, from "In Her Stilettos". Check out the interview below to learn more about her personal style and which celeb she would love to style.

Meet Diya!
I'm a UT Austin senior double majoring in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry. I blog fashion at In Her Stilettos, and in my "free time" I help out around rock/metal concerts. I like classic arcade games, to make and eat food, every genre of music under the sun, everything chemistry, art history, revolutions, a tad bit of philosophy, and more.

Describe your personal style
I'm into textures and detailing a lot. I LOVE 1920's & 1980's detailing along with 1950's silhouettes... so I have a lot of full skirts, beaded/sequined/embroidered/leather/vintage fur items. I also love a lot of gothic and dark jewelry due to my work in the metal industry...but I always will love a simple strand of pearls.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
I've always been into wearing princess dresses and dresses in general ever since I was a little girl. However, I've just started to actually pay attention to the fashion industry and runway looks since I've started college a little over 3 years ago.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest? Thriftstores and etsy's vintage selection are your best friends! I've found many goodies at Savers or Buffalo Exchange that are designer pieces or well-made vintage ones. I remember getting a blazer that still had nordstrom's $156 tag on it in the 99 cent clearance section at Savers. I also resort to Forever 21 to round out my look.... I love finding something amazing in there amongst the "I love my boyfriend" tanks!

What are your fashionista five must haves?
Leather jacket, a dress that makes you feel glamorously feminine in, a pair of heels you feel confident and sexy in, a blazer that goes with everything, and a great belt.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?

Online I love forever21, etsy, charlotte russe, ideeli and other sample sale sites, lulu's and urban outfitters. In person I usually thrift, go to buffalo exchange, or shop at forever 21 when Tim (the bf) is getting his bi-monthly haircut at the mall. I do love Austin's City Wide Garage Sale! Best place ever... $10 vintage fur piles, $8 vintage clothing piles, and tons and tons of vintage jewelry as well as raw strung stones for making jewelry. I tend to buy most of my items online since I don't have a car.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
I have a lot of girls I admire for their style... Kate Lanphear, Olivia Palermo, Alexa Chung, etc. However, I'm not sure I consider them my fashion icons because I don't not want to dress EXACTLY like them.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
I'm not sure if I'm the best person to ask in this department! I've only been pulled into Sephora by the guys I'm dating when they need a new bottle of cologne and I didn't have a hairdryer at my place until Tim brought it over. I do think the best beauty tip is to not soak your face in liquid foundation and to wear sunscreen all the time.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
Not sure if I'm qualified, but I think Angelina Jolie would be a dream to dress since she's so damn gorgeous but she always wears black!

Book Review: Real Role Models: Successful African Americans Beyond Pop Culture

I literally just finished reading Real Role Models: Successful African Americans Beyond Pop Culture by Joah Spearman & Louis Harrison about 10 minutes ago and I have to say that I am so blessed to have this book and knowledge now. The book profiles various African American women and men in various professions and showcases their rise to success. Each chapter represents a person and describes their background and chosen career and how they are role models. None of the people in this book aren't Lebron James or Beyonce. They are normal everyday professionals working jobs just like average person.

This book what written to show young people (especially African American youth) who and what real role models. The authors wants it's readers to be inspired by the people profiled and to learn from their success and follow on their own road to success.

I love that the book didn't showcase well known people such as Kobe Bryant, Jay Z, Beyonce, etc. They told stories of people who have followed their dreams and goals without flashing money around and having 5 houses and cars. It shows us young African Americans that there is still hope and you don't have to be famous in order to be considered "successful". I would love to go into more detail about this book but I don't want to give too much away. I would highly suggest that everyone, no matter your ethnicity or gender, to go purchase this book from your local bookstore and spend time reading it. Trust me, you will feel a sense of empowerment after reading at least one chapter. Student/Parent Loans: Should you get them?

One of my readers recently asked me a question about student loans and what are the pros and cons of them. I know many of you are thinking about getting student loans to help cover the costs of college. Don't be afraid of the thought of borrowing money!!! Loans are something that can either help or harm you (financially). It is something that you should carefully think about with your parents before signing the papers for a loan.

Most colleges will offer you a student loan(s) once you apply and are accepted into the university. It will be shown on your financial aid award letter. To receive a financial aid award letter, you must apply for financial aid through FAFSA.ed.gov . I would highly suggest that everyone apply for financial aid even if you don't think your family qualifies for it.

Students are allowed to apply and qualify for various types of loans. The most common loans for students are called the federal Stafford loan. They have various loan amounts and they depend on what year (freshman, sophomore, Jr. senior) you are in school. The higher you are, the more you are allowed to borrow in loans.

The main thing to remember about student loans is that you HAVE to pay the money back. I know from personal experience that you have to pay the loan back once you graduate or withdraw from college. They give you at least 6 months after college graduation before you have to start making payments. Every loan is different and some do have interest rates that you may have to pay for while in college or you can opt out of it. Growing up what career did you always dream of fulfilling and why?

Early on I thought I was going to grow up to play in the NBA. I was really into sports and I was pretty good at basketball.

Think about your high school days, what senior superlative would you give yourself?
I received the "most talented" and if I HAD to give myself one it would be that. (even though I had so much more to learn)

You attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia and then went on to become an alumni of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. How was that experience at both schools?
Morehouse was really instrumental in my maturation process. I had always dreamed of attending Morehouse, having family members that had gone before me. I ended up leaving because I felt I needed to develop my skills at the highest level. There's no better place than New York.

In college, what did you major in and were you actively involved within campus life?
Jazz Performance

After college how was the transition from being a college student to working in the "real world"? Did you have any crazy, fun jobs?
I didn't really have a transition time. I was doing gigs and touring while I was in college so once I graduated it just meant I didn't have work to turn in anymore.

You just released your own album, "To Those Who Believe", can you tell us more about the album? Any favorite songs?
The album is a snapshot of where I am in life. It's a soundtrack through where I am right now and how I got here.

Rapper/Actor, Common, is featured on the album, how did that collaboration come about?
Common is a great person and an incredible artist. We toured together not long ago and he was more than willing to contribute. He believes in real music.

You have worked with a wide range of well known and talented entertainers. Who was your overall favorite person that you have worked with and why?
Diddy. He has an unbelievable business IQ and soak up so much knowledge just being around him.

Aside from being an accomplished sax player/musician/composer, what else do you enjoy doing that some people may not know about? Any hidden talents?
As I stated earlier, I can STILL play basketball at a high level.

What is the best part of your job and why?
I get to express myself and bring joy and betterment to people through the gift that God has blessed me with.

If you could work with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
I would love to do a song with Radiohead. I love them as a group and think it would be a great collaboration.

Who are some of your idols that look up to or admire? What & who inspires you?
My dad Dr. Kenneth Whalum Jr. (who's featured on my album), Martin Luther King Jr. I really care about my people and i'm always looking for ways to bring light.

To the aspiring musicians and artists, what advice would you give them?
The same thing my uncle Kirk told me coming up..."If somebody tells you that you can't make it in music, they're lying."

To anyone looking to pursue a college education, what advice would you give them?
DO IT! It's a great feeling knowing you have that degree to fall back on.

Letters of Recommendations: Make sure to get one

**I am posting this blog post from awhile ago and I just want to make sure that everyone reads this. It is very important to go ahead and obtain a letter or recommendation. Check out the post below! **

Letters of recommendation are highly important and I personally think that they are needed when applying for jobs, internships, college admissions and more. They are letters that your boss and/or teacher (or anyone else other than family) can put a good word in for you. They tend to talk about your work ethic, your personality and strengths and sometimes any awards that you made have received.

It helps to have at least one letter so that prospective schools can see what type of person you are. I would suggest sending one of these letters to the school even if the school doesn't require you to have one. During my senior year in high school I asked my English teacher to write me one and...she did! I still have that letter today hehe! Overall, it helps you out a lot!! I would suggest only asking people who really know you and can put in a good word for you. Examples include; teachers, coaches, supervisor, managers, etc.

Ready, Set, Go!!! Summer Jobs/Internships

I know everyone is probably still excited that it is 2011, I know I am. It seems as though time has gone by so fast. I personally didn't make any major New Years resolutions however I know some of you all may have. If one of your resolutions was to find a job, this post is for YOU!!!

This is the perfect time for students (high school & college) to start preparing your summer job search. This is the time of year when a lot of companies start to post opening for internships and summer jobs. I would highly suggest while you all are still on winter break to get a head start on your search. Make sure to also pay close attention to deadlines! Go ahead and start asking your teachers, supervisors, mentors, professors, coaches, etc for letters of recommendations or possible leads for jobs.

Career Spotlight with Jacqueline M. Peros

Meet Jacqueline M. Peros!
Marketer turned Image & Style Expert who loves what she does! I grew up in the suburbs on Long Island, NY but always knew Manhattan was my final destination. Hobbies? Who needs hobbies when you live in such a dynamic and energetic city as Manhattan! However, if collecting and reading non-fiction mystery novels fit into a definition of a hobby, that would be mine :)

Growing up what career did you always dream of fulfilling and why?
When I was young my dad used to have a daughter and dad only day for my birthday and he would ask me what and where I wanted to go. One year I told him I wanted to go to Manhattan so the two of us headed into the city, had lunch and walked around. We stopped in to see the beautiful St. Patrick's Cathedral and it was on the steps of this stunning church that I saw a fashion photo shoot taking place and it was so exciting! For a very brief time, I wanted to be a model but at 5 ft. tall I knew that wasn't going to be a viable career option. However, the fashion shoot was where I started my love for fashion and fabrics. I started thinking about perhaps becoming a designer for the petite market.

Think about your high school days, what senior superlative would you give yourself?
Compassion. I have a sister with cerebral palsy so I've always thought of other people's feelings.

Think back to your senior year in college, what career plans did you dream of or hope to achieve?
Academically I did well in college and was focused on securing a marketing management job in a large bank located in Manhattan. My counselors told me that these positions were highly coveted and that my business mind along with my creative side would be a great fit. One morning while riding up the elevator for a bank interview, armed with my very official looking attaché case that contained only a few copies of my resume, a conservative blue suit and hair pulled back, I looked around and realized I couldn't be this person for the long haul. I ended up getting a job in marketing but for a fashion manufacturing company which was better suited for my personality.

In college, what did you major in and were you actively involved within campus life?
I majored in marketing and to be honest, I wasn't involved in campus life at all. I worked almost full time (30 hours) while going to college so there wasn't a lot of time to partake in campus activities. I've always been extremely independent and never wanted to rely on anyone to help support me financially so I worked to help pay my college expenses.

After college how was the transition from being a college student to working in the "real world"? Did you have any crazy, fun jobs?
The transition was very easy for me because I was working a lot of hours during my college life anyway. Sadly, now that I think about this question about crazy, fun jobs, I didn't have any of those!

Can you explain your current profession?
I attend the Fashion Institute of Technology and became a certified Image Consultant. I provide clients (both companies and individuals) a competitive edge through wardrobe development, business etiquette and communication training.

What is the best part of your job and why?
Teaching people how to be their best self and seeing them have the confidence to leverage opportunities that they might have not thought possible.

For recent college grads, what style advice would you give when going to internship/job interviews?
Know the dress code for their specific industry. If they are going for a creative job, don't show up in a conservative business suit or vice versa. If the job candidate gets the wardrobe wrong, the company might think that he/she won't fit into their corporate culture. It's really very important to know your audience! Moreover, as an intern, work the job as if it you are a full time employee and you are happy to do whatever is asked of you. Internships are a great way to 1. secure a full time paid job in a depressed job marketplace and 2. make professional connections that can lead to other employment offers.

If you could style any celebrity, who would you choose?
I think Jennifer Garner is such a natural beauty but she hides behind jeans and flannel shirts. I'd love to get her into more color and inject some fun pieces into her wardrobe.

To anyone looking to pursue a college education, what advice would you give them?
Take advantage of elective courses and select ones that are out of your comfort zone because you never know what might appeal to you.

What's next for you?
I'd love to host a radio show where I can give advice on career and style.

Anything else that you would like to add?
Always be authentic. People can see through those that aren't being true to themselves.

I'm so excited to finally say, Happy New Year!!! Welcome 2011!!!!! I have to say, 2010 was a great and highly successful year for me and many others. I want to personally thank each and everyone of my readers & followers for supporting me through this journey of blogging. I have been so blessed and will continue to be blessed in so many ways. I'm very proud to announce that my blog has recently reached 100 followers and I couldn't be more proud of myself and you all as well!

Flashback 2010!!!

Wow! It seems like yesterday when I came up with the idea to start a blog about college. I know I havent' been blogging for a long time like many other bloggers that I personally admire. I first started my this blog back in June 2010 and I have to say that in a short span of time, I have accomplished a lot! More than I ever thought that I could.

I am slowly but surely watching my dreams and goals unfold right in front of my eyes. I have to say that I love every moment of it. All of the people whom I had the chance to interview and feature on my blog, THANKS!!! You are the ones who help put the pieces of the puzzle together. To all of my faithful readers and subscribers, you all are the finishing touches to the puzzle! I adore each and everyone of you.

This blog is only the beginning for me and I hope to continue to empower, inspire, encourage, and motivate everyone on the importance of an education. I enjoy helping people and knowing that I helped improve or put a smile on someones face. I LOVE it!

Enjoying the Holidays!!!

Just wanted to check in with everyone and see how everyone is doing!! I am loving and enjoying this Christmas. It has been so much fun to chill out and have fun with family and friends. Here in North Carolina we have tons of snow!!! We really don't get too much snow during the winter season. However, we received about 9-11 inches of snow the other day and it's still here!!! It's Never Too Late To Learn..

Before you go off to college don't overlook the basic things in life such as doing laundry, cooking, making up your bed, cleaning your room, budgeting, etc. I have begun to notice that some of my friends and other random people that I interact with don't know how to do certain things. I don't mean this in a negative way because we all have has our parents shelter us and "baby us" at times. Trust me, I'm guilty of this as well but there comes a time when you need to learn some basic survival skills and tips.

My advice to everyone going to college please make a list of the things (cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, budgeting, organizing, time management, etc) that you aren't 100% confident in doing. With that list, find someone is highly knowledgeable of that certain thing and ask for help.

For example, if you have no clue how to cook ask your parents or anyone else (it doesn't have to be a world renowned chef) to help you make a simple dish. While in college you are probably not going to have to make gourmet dishes but you do need to know how to put together something without burning the house down hehe!

So sit down and think about it! What can and can't you do or what would you want to learn how to do. I will try my best to keep providing you all with helpful tips and advice to make the transition from high school to college easier.

I am so thrilled to share my interview with Mark Brunetz of one of my favorite television shows, "Clean House" on the Style Network. He shared everything about his high school days and how he became a well known interior designer. Make sure to check out the interview below!

Meet Mark!

Mark Brunetz is currently the Emmy Award winning co-star of ‘Clean House’ on the Style Network. With over 300 episodes of television to his credit, Mark has become one the most recognizable celebrity home designers today creating accessible, well-designed rooms for the masses both in the U.S. and abroad. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and now sitting at the creative helm of his LA-based design & production firm, Mark has collaborated with Hollywood’s A-list, launched an eponymous line of home furnishings on HSN and released his first book Take the U Out of Clutter with Penguin Books. He is also the founder of Design Without Borders, a charity that works internationally to harness the power of design to transform people's lives and the spaces in which they live. In his spare time, Mark loves to write, travel, take yoga class and eat. He currently resides in Glendale, California.

Growing up what career did you always dream of fulfilling and why?
A racecar driver. I’m obsessed with speed. I managed to fulfill that childhood dream a few years back when I drove solo in an Indy 500 race car at top speed of 165 mph. It was thrilling! And for the record, I keep my Mario Andretti card in my wallet… just in case.

Think about your high school days, what senior superlative would you give yourself?
Despite being voted ‘best dressed’, I would say I was more of a Renaissance Man (not sure the superlative for that is). I was into everything; scholastics, tennis, playing trumpet in a local orchestra, performing in musical theatre, student council – you name it, I did it! I don’t think kids realize how easy life in high school can be. It seems we tend to focus more on how difficult it is. I definitely saw it as an opportunity to experiment and discover who I really was which was someone who loved having their hands in a lot of things.

Think back to your senior year in college, what career plans did you dream of or hope to achieve?
My biggest goal as a senior was to continue my education and ultimately work in the entertainment industry. Instead of going to NYU, I opted to study the sciences which to this day, I’m grateful I made that decision. It made me see the world I live in very differently. It’s a fresh perspective I rely on day-in, day-out.

In college, what did you major in and were you actively involved within campus life?
I attended East Carolina University (ECU) on scholarship and acquired a B.S. in Biology/Pre-Med and a Masters in Exercise Physiology. I was very involved in campus life which ranged from serving as President of the Pre-Medical Honor Society to performing in the Theatre Arts Program. I thought this was the best time to dabble in anything and everything because all I had to really think about was school. I was out to create the best experience possible for myself.

After college how was the transition from being a college student to working in the "real world"? Did you have any crazy, fun jobs?
My transition into the ‘real world’ was almost storybook. I was presenting my thesis at the American College of Sports Medicine in Baltimore, MD, and I saw this job posting for an Exercise Physiologist at the Jane Fonda Workout in Beverly Hills. I remember saying to my colleagues, “I’m gonna get that job.” They laughed. Four months later, I was working for Jane. Although I came to LA with nothing but a suitcase saying I would only stay for six months, I knew once I got here I was in the right place. That was in 1990.

We all know of you from the #1 rated Style Network TV show "Clean House", how did that job opportunity come about?
After working for Jane Fonda, I parlayed my creativity into film and co-founded Fortis Films with Sandra Bullock whom I was close friends from my ECU days. After five years in film, I was itching to do something bigger and more satisfying so I launched my own design & production firm. Design was a love of mine from childhood. That same year, MTV asked me to shoot the pilot for Crib Crashers. Based on that, the head of Style Network asked me to hop over to Clean House in 2003. Since then, I’ve designed over 200 houses for some 2000 homeowners. I secretly want to submit to the Guinness Book of World Records for the most room designed by one designer. Fingers crossed.

We see on Clean House that you are the interior designer, how do you come up with some of the best room designs in the midst of working in a messy & hectic house?
I have a vivid imagination which allows me to see things that aren’t necessarily there—that includes empty space through all the clutter. And since all of my designs are inspired by the people who live there, it’s easy to keep it fresh. Just as people are one-of-a-kind, so are the rooms I create. I wouldn’t do it any other way.

What is the best part of your job and why?
Helping people see that life is great and that living to one’s full potential is a birthright given to everyone. Every day, people trust me to come into their homes and make critical decisions for them and their families. That’s a huge responsibility and I don’t take it lightly. Helping people help themselves is number one in my book. It’s why I love what I do.

If you could decorate any celebrities house who would you choose?
Been there, done that with celebrities. Now it wouldn’t be a person but a place: The White House. I firmly believe that people are profoundly affected by the spaces in which they live and given the influence the White House has, in all its glory, I think it’s true potential as a statement in our culture has yet to be realized. It’s only a matter of time.

If you could have any other job in the world, what would it be and why?
I would love to be the person who writes the dictionary; creates new words or redefines the current meanings of existing words. Everything we say shapes our world and there are some words in the dictionary that keep us anchored in an undesirable past. As an evolving society, it’s time we rethink what we say both to ourselves and to each other.

Who are some of your idols that look up to or admire and why?
Never had an idol but I tend to migrate towards people who have overcome great adversity and thrived. It’s the part of the human spirit I adore.

To anyone looking to pursue a college education, what advice would you give them?
College is what you make of it, not what it makes of you. And since there’s no re-do, give it everything you’ve got.

What's next for you?
Over the past several years I’ve been feeling like a big fish in a small pond and it’s not where I’m most comfortable. As an artist, entrepreneur and global citizen, it’s hard for me to rest on my laurels so it’s time to shift the tides. My focus over the next year is to expand my brand with the message of ‘living life to the fullest’ through producing other television shows, making guest appearances in the U.S. and abroad, and launching several new (and very cool, I might add) on-line services. I’ve recently partnered with some of the best companies in the world in order to make that happen. It’s an exciting time.

"Dress Like a Fashionista" ~ Carlis & Katya

I am back with another round of the most popular feature "Dress Like a Fashionista". This time I had the chance to interview the two lovely ladies (Carlis & Katya) of Spicy Candy DC fashion blog. Check out the interview below to learn more about their unique personal styles. Enjoy!!!

Bio: We live, work and blog in DC. Blogging is our way to escape the 9-5 and indulge in our favorite hobbies (fashion, photography, etc) as well as learn about new places here in our area. We've been best friends since 8th grade and have in one way or another influenced one another with our styles. We have similar taste in fashion but our styles are definitely very different and unique.

Describe your personal style?
Carlis-I would describe my style as Flirty/casual. I love puffy short skirts and casual comfy tops - nothing too tight, I need room to breathe!

Katya- My personal style is casual/chic. I love simplicity - you can never have too many basics

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
Carlis- I loved fashion ever since I can remember! My fav game growing up was pretending my friend and I were stylist, she would come over my house with a bunch of her clothes and I would take mine out, we would hang it all over my room and pretend it was our little boutique. We would then invite our friends to come over and pick outfits for them, it was so much fun!

My personal style has definitely evolved to a more mature one. When I was younger I wasn't afraid of bright colors and shiny fabrics, but now I have found love for some of the darker, cool, more mature colors and prints. I still however still love my accessories to be very bright!

Katya- Yes, I have been into fashion since the moment I realized the role clothes play in society at the age of five when my mom told me that covering up, even at the beach, is necessary :) It also helps that my mom is a huge fashionista herself - and the biggest inspiration in my life!

My style has evolved so much over the years. I have experimented with a lot of different looks, it's fun, and also a good way to figure out what you're most comfortable with.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
Carlis- I would suggest for them to get creative with what they already have! create new outfits by layering pieces and making use of your fav dress in more than just one way. Also visit thrift stores in your area. Most of my favorite garments come from places like goodwill - vintage pieces are so beautiful and so well made. Stores like forever21 are great too, especially for shoes.

Katya- I agree with Carlis in that vintage can take you a long way when you're on a budget, but if you are the type who is not fond of vintage, check out online designer discount sites like Gilt.com and of course eBay is great too.

What are your fashionista five must haves?
Carlis- A comfy cardigan, high wasted flirty skirt, Nars lip gloss (Turkish Delight) Black skinny jeggings & a pair of comfy wedges.

Katya- The multi-use American Apparel scarf, brown Balenciaga bag, OTK boots, basic white blouse, and a big, statement ring.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?
Carlis- Forever21, H&M, Urban Outfitters & Goodwill.

Katya- H&M, Zara, Forever21, thrift stores, and Urban Outfitters. However, my newest addiction has to be American Apparel. Everything fits me as it was made for me and the quality is amazing.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
Carlis-I absolutely love Stylist Catherine Baba, her free spirit & unique style is something that inspires me every day

Katya-I will have to be cliche and say Kate Moss. I absolutely Love how simple, classic and effortless she is.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
Katya- Deffinitely less is more when it comes to daytime makeup but I also think that this is the age to experiment with colors. I had fun with eyeshadows in college - you can get away with almost anything.

Carlis-Im so bad with make up...I can prob get tips from some college fashionstas my self! lol..I guess less is always more, a good lip gloss and liquid eyeliner is all I really need.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
Katya- I have to say Kate Moss again. It would be so fun to dress her because u can pretty much throw any thing on and make it look like a million bucks. Kate Moss is like working with a blank canvas every time! Sienna Miller would be my close second.

Carlis- I would love to style Eva Mendez and or Nicole Richie.

Anything else that you would like to add or suggest?
Katya- Have fun with fashion, don't ever be afraid of your personal expression but always remember to stay true to yourself and be careful not to become just another fashion victim chasing after the latest trends. In college education comes first but if you're going to study hard...might as well do it in style :)

Carlis- Being unique in this world where every one is tyring to be a little bit of every body else will take you a long way. Stick to what looks best on you and not any body else.

Great news!! I am finally done with fall semester at college. This past semester has been fun, crazy, stressful, etc. I am so happy that I can finally kick back and relax and not worry about finishing up homework. I am officially on Christmas & New Years break!!! Now on to some other news.

Final Exams: PLEASE STUDY!!!

As winter season is going into full effect so is, FINALS!!! I know that is something that most students of all ages and grades have all heard of or, dread. Seriously there isn't anything to be scared of..well if you haven't been paying attention in your classes then you may have something to worry about. Final exams are the big test that your professor has been preparing you for the entire semester basically to test your knowledge of the course subject.

Most final exams are a big combined test from every test or quiz that you have taken throughout the semester in class. To prepare for the final exam, I would highly suggest that you look over all tests, quizzes, readings, notes, etc. This is a good way to refresh your brain on the content that was covered in class. More than likely at least 80% of that will be on the final exam.

I just gone done with one of my final exams and I studied all of my notes, professor's PowerPoint's, and previous tests taken in the class and most of the content that I studied was on the final exam. I was so happy that I studied and prepared for the final because if I didn't, I would have failed for sure!!! Studying does pay off and helps a lot.

Not only should you study for your final exams, you should be studying and going over your notes throughout the semester. I would never recommend that you wait until the day before to cram for a test. Yes, it may help a little but you run the chance of becoming highly stressed out leaving you a bit nervous.

Here are some quick tips that I would suggest for tests and final exams:

Eat a good breakfast, lunch and dinner before taking a test/exam.
Get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before.
Form a study group with your classmates and STUDY!
Ask your professor for any study guides or any other helpful notes that will help.
Don't be afraid to ask the professor for help, that's what they are there for, to teach and help you.
Re-write your notes once class is over and spend at least 30 minutes reviewing them and any other chapter material.

Prioritize: What's More Important???

I had to sit down and make a list of everything that was important to me and prioritize my life. Academics quickly moved up on my list and ended up at #1. My social life and everything else fell into place. By doing so, I was no longer failing in my classes nor was I stressed out.

In college it is important to grow up and mature and focus on whats more important. I would hate to see anyone fail out of college because they didn't have their priorities straight. It's really not hard, all you have to do is make the time to sit down and organize them.

Meet DJ Skeet

Born in Iowa, moved to LA was I was 16. Played in hardcore bands most of my life until I started producing music fell into DJing. Now it's my profession.

Growing up what career did you always dream of fulfilling and why?
I wanted to be a pro athlete most of my life, that or a stock broker strange enough.

Think about your high school days, what senior superlative would you give yourself?
I have no idea. I enjoyed high school but I went to 3 different schools in 4 years so I suppose I was always the "new kid"

Did you always want to become a DJ? How did it come about?
Never really considered being a DJ til I discovered house music in high school. I started making electronic music towards the end of high school and in college so that was probably the instigator.

Who are some of your musical influences?
Talking Heads, Xiu Xiu, Converge, DJ Falcon, Thomas Bangalter, Dirtybird Recs, Mannie Fresh

Of all of the people that you have worked with, who was your favorite and why?
Thats tough 3oh!3 are my some of my best friends so probably those guys.
You are a well known professional DJ in the L.A. area, what do you love most about being a DJ?
The ability to Travel is really nice, i've been all over the world doing what I love and im thankful for it everyday.

Who are some of your idols that look up to or admire and why?
DJ AM (RIP) lived life in such a meaningful way, taught everyone around him so much.

For anyone aspiring to become a DJ or work within the entertainment industry, what advice would you give them?
Know what makes you different and play to it, your differences and your strengths are what will define you in entertainment

Choosing a Minor in College

I finally chose a minor to go with my major!!! Once I graduate I will have my bachelor's degree in mass communications with a concentration in journalism and I will have a minor in......Criminal Justice!! I know some people graduate college without a minor while others choose to have one.

I personally recommend that everyone have at least one minor while in college. Minor? What is that? It's basically a course of study that is a little less than pursing an entire major. It consists of about 6-8 classes within a major. A minor allows you to explore another course of study and develop knowledge in another major program. Having a minor can also help when trying to find a job after graduation. Because you have a minor, you have at least one more career/job possibility because you are knowledgeable of two different concentrations.

For example, once I graduate I can possibly get a job within the media/journalism career field or go into the criminal justice career pathway. Makes sense right? So make sure to explore your career options and interests and choose wisely.

Meet Zoe!
My name is Zoe Badley and I'm a quirky 20-year-old that enjoys the little things in life. I'm currently a blogger, Social Media Coordinator and an American Apparel employee living and working in Toronto, Canada. I study Journalism at Sheridan College and will be returning for my last semester in the winter.

Describe your personal style
Undefinable. Haha, but seriously, it's all over the place and I'm constantly changing it on a daily basis.

Growing up, were you always into fashion & beauty? Also, describe your personal style over the years and how have they changed.
As a kid I was a tomboy; I hated dresses, skirts and lived in jeans. I was never really into fashion and beauty, I was more about collecting worms and racing bikes. It wasn't until high school that I started to think more about my appearance -- I blame that on hormones and boys.

My personal style has only just started to take form within the last year and it's all due to blogging. I was more about dressing like everyone else as a teen and in college it was more about rolling out of bed and going, which was solely based on comfort. Now, I try to fuse comfort with style and so far, it's been getting easier. However, there's still days I throw my hands up in defeat and denounce my closet.

For college fashionistas on a budget, what are some tips and advice that you would suggest?
Get creative! There's no chance in hell you'll ever be able to afford a coveted closet of name brands during school, but so what? Having a unique style is so much better than fitting into a mold. Mix and match pieces, thrift shop and borrow items from family or friends if you have to. The best discovery I ever made was my mom's closet.

What are your fashionista five must haves?
A leather handbag, a supportive bra, a pair of killer heels, a little black dress and one statement piece that's unique to my style. The options are endless with all five.

What types of stores do you typically shop at?
Anywhere I can find a bargain. The frontrunners tend to be H&M, Forever 21 and Aldo.

Who is your fashionista icon and why?
My momma, that lady taught me the most important thing about fashion and style and that's staying true to myself first and foremost.

What are some makeup tips that you would suggest to college fashionistas?
When it comes to makeup, I'm all about minimal. Especially during college, who the hell has time to worry about makeup? I'm the type to throw a little bronzer on my cheeks and just mascara on the top lids. Don't go all out, unless you're in the Makeup program. Just coverup those under-eye bags that everyone seems to get during school and some mascara, you'll be fine.

If you could be a stylist for a day for a celebrity, which celeb would that be and why?
Taylor Momsen, I love her to death but homegirl needs an intervention.

Change it up!!

Have you ever thought about your what you current email address is? Is it a nickname type of email address like; honeybooloveshim@gmail.com or bigbeautifulbooty000@yahoo.com ? Doesn't these email addresses sound crazy but funny?..Yes, however it is not a good idea to have email addresses like these when you are sending emails to college admissions counselors or emailing a professor. How can a person take you seriously without knowing you? Trust me, with a wacky email address they will more than likely judge you based on it. With that said, if you have an email address similar to the examples that I mentioned..please CHANGE them now!

Make a new email address and keep it simple. For example John Doe; email account, jdoe15@yahoo.com. It is best to do your first and/or middle initial along with your last name with a number just in case someone in the world has the same initials. Email addresses like these are simple but makes you appear mature and professional.
Remember you are about to become a young adult and with that you have to make some minor changes. We all know that people judge one another but you don't want to give them a reason to do so. Just take this as step one of becoming a young adult.

Meet Nadia!
I am wife and a mother of two young children who resides in the Washington DC metro area. I am full time professional, but when I am not working I enjoy spending time with my husband and children and doing whatever makes them happy. This usually entails seeing out activities that will keep the children entertained.

In high school, what was your dream job/career? What were some of your interests?
In high school, I went various phases of career interests. The most memorable are FBI agent, writer, publishing company entrepreneur, and attorney. I am sure there are others that I am forgetting.

Did you get into your 1st choice college? If not, how did you take the rejection and how did you re-group and continue to pursue your higher education?
I was fortunate enough to get into my first choice for college.

How was your overall transition from high school to college life? How did you adjust from living with your family to living with strangers? Did you get homesick?
I adjusted pretty well. I had been looking forward to being away from home and new independence so I never felt homesick. I called home once a week or whenever I wanted to share my day with my parents and that was enough for me. Living with strangers was never really an issue for me. I have two siblings so I was used to sharing my space. Although I have never really been a social butterfly, I spent time exploring the campus and met people along the way.

In college are you/were you involved in any student clubs/organizations? How would you describe your campus life?
I never got involved with student clubs/organizations. I do regret that. I wish I was more involved. I really just spent time around campus with friends. I guess, I was pretty low key in college. I was content with going to football games, basketball games and a few parties.

How have you grown since your high school days? Noticed any change in your personality?
College matures you in so many ways. It is the gateway to so many new experiences and is a time to blossom. I looked in the mirror one day and did not recognize myself. I feel that way every time I enter a new phase of my life. If you are not growing as your years and experiences increase, then you simply are not tuned in to your life.

What advice would you give undergraduate students looking to apply to grad school?
Take time to really decide who you are and what you want to accomplish in life. Going to graduate school for the sake of going or because you are doing what others expect you to do is a horrible way to spend your time and your money. Graduate school is an expensive and a serious endeavor. Take a couple of years off after college to work, save money, and explore careers. Interview people who are in the profession or professions you are considering. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, then explore business ideas. If you come up with a business idea you like, allow that idea to direct what graduate discipline you pursue. Graduate school is not going anywhere but if you go before you are ready you may find yourself trying to "find yourself" afterward. Find yourself first then go to graduate school.

Meet Rae!
I am a single 33 year old, who is originally from the P.G County area, but now resides in Cary, NC. I received a B.S in Marketing from Hampton University in 1998 (wow, sounds like a long time ago huh? Ok it was).I enjoy travelling and throwing random get-togethers. I can plan a party with a pitcher of kool-aid and a roll of Tums.

In high school, what was your dream job/career? What were some of your interests?
In high school I always thought that I’d work in marketing for a major sports league like the NFL. Most of the men in my family were obsessed with football, so I grew to love it as well. Plus, the players aren’t too bad to look at either. I loved to give presentations and felt very comfortable in front of crowds.

Did you get into your 1st choice college? If not, how did you take the rejection and how did you re-group and continue to pursue your higher education?
Yes. Throughout high school, I wanted to go to Spellman, but after a summer at Hampton, a pirate was born and my second choice got bumped up to #1

How was your overall transition from high school to college life? How did you adjust from living with your family to living with strangers? Did you get homesick?
The summer that I spent at Hampton helped me immensely. I already knew a lot of people on campus who were now Sophomores. And to boot, I had my own apartment. I lived in the same apartment all 4 years, with the same roommate. Some say that I was lucky, but looking back, I’d say this, I wish that I’d lived in the dorms during my freshman year. That’s when you make all of your bonds and meet the most people. Love em or hate em, those are the stories that you will share later.

I did get homesick. There wasn’t much to do except go to Wal-mart in the middle of the night. By junior year, the boredom wore off and I took advantage of what being away had to offer.

In college are you/were you involved in any student clubs/organizations? How would you describe your campus life?
I was involved in Rock the Vote and the Student Government Association.

How have you grown since your high school days? Noticed any change in your personality? Mature more?
I’ve definitely matured. Sometimes, I can’t believe the decisions that I’ve made in the past. But I think that they were necessary to grow. I don’t make decisions so quickly now. I think about how those decisions will affect the people around me and what will happen in the long run.

What advice would you give undergraduate students looking to apply to grad school?
Be sure of what you want to do. If you majored in something in undergrad that wasn’t your cup of tea, grad school can be your opportunity to go into another discipline. Also, when you graduate, take advantage of all the freebies and discounts to take things like GMAT, GRE, etc... For instance, when I graduated, if you’d been awarded the Pell Grant, you had two years to take the GRE for free. I wish that I’d just taken it and had it in my back pocket. Those tests are expensive.

Random advice:
If you do almost everything that you’re supposed to, when you mess up, no one will really care. They’ll just chalk it up to a random mistake. So choose those mistakes carefully.

Travel a lot before you settle down after college. Don’t jump into marriage and kids too quickly. Disney is great, but Tahiti without kids is way better.
Spend your summers working and making contacts. In this economy, you’ll need that experience.
Talk to you teachers. Keep in touch with them. Especially the teachers within your major. You’d be surprised how they can help you later. You want them to remember who you are.

Don’t be afraid to take a chance. Once you graduate move wherever you want. If you don’t like it, move somewhere else the next year. It’s the benefit of living your life for you.

Time flies too quickly. Have fun in college. Don’t stay too long, but enjoy it while you’re there. Meet as many people as you can. Knowing those people can help you later. Oh, and don’t brush off those nice guys/girls so quick. They turn out to be the ones you want later. Trust me

And finally, if you’re deciding what college to attend. Go to the college that you want to attend. Later in life, you’ll have to decide where to move based on your spouses’ career or the kids school or because it’s near the best caregiver for a sick relative. You’ll have to take everyone else’s situation and feelings into consideration. Don’t do that for college. Do it for you and what you want. Go abroad if you want. Wherever you are, your friends will come to see you and your parents will too. Do it for you!

"Career Spotlight" with DJ Jerome Baker III

As promised here is my interview with Washington, DC DJ Jerome Baker III. For all of you aspiring DJ's, this is especially for you!!

Meet Jerome!!
My name is Jerome Baker III & I am a DJ in Washington, DC. I am a huge music fan, Batman nerd, and appreciate home cooked meals.

Growing up what career did you always dream of fulfilling and why? - Honestly, I always wanted to be involved in music in some form, whether it was DJing or helping develop artists, which I am doing as well as DJing now.

Think about your high school days, what senior superlative would you give yourself? - I always had an ear to listen to. I used to listen to the gripes of my peers and did it so well I was nominated a peer mediator, which in essence would settle any issues kids had with fellow students and some cases the teachers/admin staff and/or security.

Did you get into your 1st choice college? If not, how did you take the rejection and how did you re-group and continue to pursue your higher education? - Honestly I got into the first 3 schools I applied to with relative ease. I chose 2 schools on the west coast, and one on the east, Hampton University, where I ended up going. The academic part of Hampton was easy, it was tougher getting used to the east coast weather and attitudes of the people, along with pursuing a higher education that took a great deal of effort.

What did you major in while in college? Why did you choose that course of study? - I majored in Sociology in college because I had a great desire to find out about how society and societies of the world have worked from the past to present. I was interested in things on a group and/or mass scale that fueled my desire to find out more and thus choose Sociology as my major.

I personally feel as though you should start networking while still in college, would you agree and why? - I definitely agree that networking in college is a necessary tool to increase your post graduation success, but it can also help you while you are in college. We live in a time now where college students are as connected as CEOS of companies and movers and shakers in all industries, so their network can stretch from friends in their class to board members around the world. Social media is making networking for college kids as easy as ever, and it will only continue to improve.

Did you always want to become a DJ? How did it come about? - I've wanted to be a DJ since the mid 1990s. I was always, and still am, a huge music nerd and seeing the DJs ability to control a room and an entire group of people, with music, drove me to start spinning. My interest has always been music based and thoughts of how would this song work in a club/party always cross my mind.

You are a well known DJ in the D.C and surrounding areas on the east coast, what is the best part about being a professional DJ? - Thank you for the compliment. The best part about being a professional DJ has to be the ability to do something I love for a living. I am able to play music for people and share my love of music for those that like to "put their hands up!"

Who are some of your idols that look up to or admire and why? - My mother because she has been super supportive since day one. On the DJ/music side of things, my dude StereoFaith because 3 months ago he had a brain tumor removed from his skull and has been crushing it as a DJ since he came back. The list of DJs I look up to is long and varied and I could take up 10 pages saying who and why I admire them.

For anyone aspiring to become a DJ or work within the entertainment industry, what advice would you give them? - Practice practice practice! Be the best at your craft, because nine times out of ten there is someone better, whether you know it or not. Also - believe in yourself, because when you start, outside of your mother, no one will be as supportive of you and your efforts except yourself - be your number one fan and worst critic at the same time.

What's next for you? Any upcoming projects? - Definitely want to finish releasing 3-5 mixes before the year is over. They're all conceptual and explore all types of music. As far as djing, I have gigs in Minneapolis, New Orleans & Philadelphia in November & December that I'm looking forward to greatly. Very recently I have moved into producing music, so I'm extremely excited to be getting into that and playing the music that I'm now able to make for people when I'm out DJing.

Anything else that you would like to add? - Thank you Catherine for the questions and the opportunity, your site is full of great information for anyone needing information about going to college and the collegiate experience in general. What you are doing with your site is especially important in times like these because giving back, especially with the experience and expertise you have is invaluable these days.
